Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Computers are an absolute necessity at Oberlin. Ideally, you should have your own computer so you don’t have to bother with all the noise and activity of the computer labs, and the College offers special student deals on Mac and HP laptops and printers. Even for those who can’t afford one, there are enough computers on campus to satisfy everyone’s needs. The only time you have to worry about ?nding an available computer in the labs is around exam period, when everyone frantically tries to print out articles and type up essays all at the same time. For students who live on campus, all dorm rooms are supplied with unlimited Internet access—an important asset, considering everything from class registration to communication with professors is done online. Also worth noting is the fact that at Mudd Library, you can borrow a laptop free of charge.

With three computer labs opened 24 hours a day, students can use the computers situated in the basement of Burton, Kade, and Lord Saunders until the wee hours of the morning. The Computer Store, located on the A-Level of Mudd, offers significant discounts for students and is a good option for students looking to buy a computer once they get to Oberlin. Most dorms have their own RCCs—students who specialize in computers, and are available to help people with whatever computer-related problems they might encounter. The college employs RCCs so that students don’t have to pay anything themselves; all they have to do is send an e-mail to their nearest RCC, and help will be on its way.

Labs Are Often Crowded, but Good Quality.

Most people bring their own computers, but there are limited ones in the campus libraries. Good speed connection.

Great Stuff

All the language labs, computer science labs, and library computers are up-to-date and well-serviced, and I've never had a problem finding space if I needed one. All the computers have both windows and mac operating systems installed, as well as all the software one may need. Additionally, the wifi is great, and there is 24/7 tech support at the Center for Information Technology.

Tech-Rich Campus

Just about everyone has his/her own laptop, but it's not strictly necessary. There are one or two 24-hour computer labs (though not as well maintained as the major labs in Mudd library and the science library). You can also borrow iPads and laptops for up to 3 days for free from the library.

Computers are pretty well maintained and up-to-date. Occasionally printers break, usually when you are frantically trying to print your paper that is due in 5 minutes. You get a free quota for printing and copying that is more than adequate unless you insist on printing several hundred pages of reading every week. You don't really need a personal printer.

WiFi used to be terrible but they've recently expanded it to include just about all of campus and also added bandwith so now it's pretty decent--usually enough to stream movies with no problems.
