College Prowler Take
Computers are an absolute necessity at Oberlin. Ideally, you should have your own computer so you don’t have to bother with all the noise and activity of the computer labs, and the College offers special student deals on Mac and HP laptops and printers. Even for those who can’t afford one, there are enough computers on campus to satisfy everyone’s needs. The only time you have to worry about ?nding an available computer in the labs is around exam period, when everyone frantically tries to print out articles and type up essays all at the same time. For students who live on campus, all dorm rooms are supplied with unlimited Internet access—an important asset, considering everything from class registration to communication with professors is done online. Also worth noting is the fact that at Mudd Library, you can borrow a laptop free of charge. With three computer labs opened 24 hours a day, students can use the computers situated in the basement of Burton, Kade, and Lord Saunders until the wee hours of the morning. The Computer Store, located on the A-Level of Mudd, offers significant discounts for students and is a good option for students looking to buy a computer once they get to Oberlin. Most dorms have their own RCCs—students who specialize in computers, and are available to help people with whatever computer-related problems they might encounter. The college employs RCCs so that students don’t have to pay anything themselves; all they have to do is send an e-mail to their nearest RCC, and help will be on its way.

The computer network is good. Computer labs get crowded at and near exam period. It is helpful to bring a computer, although not necessary. |

The computer labs, especially on A-level of Mudd Library, are often pretty full, but the network, despite occasional slowness, is actually pretty good. With everything online, from grades to class registration, to a plethora of class and extra-curricular e-mails, a computer is definitely worth the price. |

Bring a computer if you have the means, but there are computer labs, and one rarely has to wait to use a station. |

It’s convenient to have one’s own computer. I personally call it a necessity, but I don’t see anyone feeling handicapped without one—it’s just that you may need to spend considerable amounts of time outside your dorm room in one of the public labs, and if you’re lazy like me, you may have to have a little discipline not to burn the midnight oil. |

The computer labs can get crowded. I have a computer at school and, for most part, it is the norm among students, but that doesn’t mean it has to be. The network was incredibly slow this past semester, but otherwise, the school does a very good job of keeping the software and computers up-to-date. |
