College Prowler Take
Oberlin has no more and no less drug use than you might expect at any other affluent, liberal school of its kind. That said, most students indulge in drinking far more often than in drugs. A large majority of Obies are motivated and determined students, so drugs and alcohol are not overwhelmingly part of the social scene. Oberlin has its share of stoners, but there is very little pressure to indulge in anything besides free-spiritedness.
All sorts of drugs are available to those who want them, though pot and alcohol are by far the most prevalent. Opium may once have been a drug of choice at Oberlin, but certainly not anymore. What is certain is that many Oberlin students get hooked on caffeine, as it is the softest drug available to keep you up and working through the night. Though, there are kids on campus that prefer speed, like Adderall, coke, and meth, to keep them up. However, these more powerful stimulants often lead to other problems which Oberlin students do not have the time to deal with. There is plenty of recreational drug use, but addiction does not seem to be a problem on campus. Most importantly, even though a plethora of drugs are available to students, there is very little to no pressure to use any of these drugs. You can find potheads and straight-edge students alike at Oberlin.

I’m personally straight-edge, and I like that drugs are definitely not pushed on this campus. If you want to find it, I’m sure you can. But if you don’t want to, it might as well not exist. People respect your decisions here. |

They say it’s getting harder to buy pot around here. People smoke pot a fair amount, but not excessively. Once in a while, other drugs get in vogue. We’re not close enough to a city for there to be a huge scene. |
