Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Occidental athletics and its facilities are decent enough, and while they could benefit from some improvement, they are definitely nothing to scoff at. With recent remodeling and an effort to change the hours to be more accommodating, the situation appears to be improving.

The varsity sports teams are good as well. While football is the big draw, there are also many other sports to both play and watch at Oxy. Both men’s and women’s basketball are incredibly strong and well-performing teams every year. There is also a good variety of men’s and women’s sports, giving many options for those wanting to play, and each team is very well funded both from the school and from their own fundraising. Club sports are very strong, too, although they do suffer from funding troubles. The women’s and men’s lacrosse teams are gradually rebuilding themselves into competitive teams, only needing help to raise the money to pay for equipment and league dues. Women’s rugby is also becoming a popular sport on campus as well. These teams all do fairly well during the season, but like most club sports on campus, they need more support in funding and spectators to rise up and secure themselves as strong teams.

Spotty Performance

As a D3 school, varsity sports aren't our top priority and therefore we don't have the best records all around. However some of our teams did great and won conference. It just depends. Sports are pretty popular with a large percent of our school participating; I'm a varsity athlete myself and know numerous athletes from other teams. As for the facilities, they are of pretty decent quality. Also I've noticed that the coaches Oxy hires generally have impressive backgrounds and experience.

Small but Very Present

Most students are involved in sports, whether varsity or club. We make up in spirit what we lack in size and talent pool to draw from. School spirit is pretty high. Team performances vary across the board. Because it is a small school, fan support is great because students come out to support their friends.

School Spirit

Most people at Oxy don’t have a very strong sense of school spirit. Very little is done to foster it, and it mostly comes about when a sports team has a winning season. Most people at Oxy are pretty apathetic to situations that don’t directly involve them. Very few attend political clubs or activist events, even though those that do are extremely dedicated.

Getting Tickets

Tickets for all events are easy to come by and are usually free or very inexpensive ($2–$6 for students).
