You can party at Oxy, and you can have fun. You can drink and you can even try and do other, more risqué things in your room as well, but you may get caught. That’s the way college always works. No school will let you break the law or allow students to get into dangerous situations. Most students at Oxy seem to understand this and think that the written policies can be extreme or incredibly pointless, but that the enforcement of them is not very bad. While parties may be broken up, very rarely are students written up, and when they are, the penalties are never reported to be that bad for first-time offenses. Some students that have had multiple violations for drinking complain about the penalties, such as losing the ability to play in club sports. There is a good balance between strictness and understanding at Oxy, and there is very little to complain about.

In regards to other violations of campus policy though, the school is appropriately strict, but just enough that only a small percentage of surveyed students said that there was a problem. Issues such as rape and harassment are dealt with very severely, but a judicial process is in place to allow students a chance to defend themselves, too. The only complaints come from students that wish to be able to drink while underage on campus, or other students that feel the school should relax its drug policy to allow for marijuana use. Overall, there is enough strictness on campus to keep things within order and to keep students feeling safe, but things are still dealt with with an understanding attitude to ensure that students have a right to defend themselves.

Overbearing Occidental

Oxy is essentially a dry campus. The administration imposes so many rules on drinking and partying, and offer the students few alternatives. Everyone tries to go to off campus parties because the campus safety and RA's are very strict, but then the poor people who's homes were invaded suffer the consequences because campus safety and LAPD break up the parties. Also, some of the neighbors are mean, especially living closer to campus.

You can get away with a lot. Dorm parties are common with drinking and even smoking if people get creative. You just have to be smart; if you have a strict RA on duty then obviously it isn't a good idea to party in your dorm that night. Campus Safety is pretty lenient with the amount of smokers here, but it's not wise to push them...

Too Strict for Own Good

First offense deserves a write-up and assessment by jury. Very harsh. We're college kids and the strictness of the policy isn't going to change anything. If anything, it makes drinking less safe because people are too afraid to report any problems or request help if things go awry because of fear of a write-up.
