Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Like any college campus, there are drugs at Occidental. A serious effort is continually underway to rid the school of any and all drug use, but unfortunately nothing is perfect. If the desire is there, people can and will obtain and use drugs, but very few at Oxy actually do this, especially openly. There are no drug dealers in the dorms or large epidemics of drug use, but drug use does go on. Most students that do use drugs smoke pot, although there are a rising number of students that have been reported to be using cocaine and ecstasy as well. Drug use is hidden, and when it does come out, it is dealt with quickly and strictly, and no one seems to have any serious concerns about drugs on campus. Very few of the students that don’t use drugs see it as a big part of campus life, and none consider drugs to be a problem on campus. To expect any school to be free of drugs is foolish, and Oxy seems to be as drug free as possible. Other issues, such as alcohol abuse and sexual assault, are greater concerns for students. Those who wish to use drugs will certainly find the means to do so at Oxy if they try, but those that wish to remain far away from such a scene will have no problem.

Low Drug Use

Most people drink, we are a wet campus so its okay if your 21. Some people smoke weed and do E and coke but its not like anyone forces anyone to do anything, and its not a lot of people who do it.

More Than Expected

Pot is used much more than I thought it would be. Even smoking cigarettes is pretty common. Alcohol is definitely a big part of the social scene.

It's Los Angeles...

If you're not from California and you come here, it may be a bit of shock for you when you find out how many people here smoke pot. There are tons of Medical Marijuana clubs in Los Angeles and laws in Eagle Rock towards marijuana are very lax. Pot smoking is very prevalent, but students seem to find good balances between their school work and marijuana use. Many students choose to take "party drugs" on the weekend (E, coke, etc.) but most of this is hidden and students (for the most part) tend to use it responsibly. Drug use is not a problem here but since drugs are easily available in LA, they are more prevalent than at other schools.
