Most Occidental students complain about the general lack of facilities and available entertainment on campus, specifically because of the emptiness of the Eagle Rock area. Without a lot of variety and with very few events, Oxy facilities rate very poorly. There is, unfortunately, not a lot to do on the Occidental campus, and the variety of events are often lacking. The student-run Programming Board does put on quite a few events, which combined with the programs that clubs put on and the theater department’s plays gives students some things to do on campus. This can become stale, however, simply because by the end of the year the same events happen over and over again. A lot of students complain about the dances, simply because most money for events goes to them, and very little else is put on that has much value. The weekends are particularly lacking, as the campus seems to shut down for Friday and Saturday nights. If a dance or football game is going on, there can be a slight rise in the atmosphere on campus, though. Most students usually end up spending their weekends in their dorms, although a good number seem to be going off campus for entertainment as well. Certain campus parties and plays do liven it up at times, but there are still many gaps in programming, which combined with the lack of variety makes the situation even worse.

The academic facilities such as the library are top-notch, though, and most students have nothing but good things to say about them. The library gets the highest praise, as students find it to be one of the best places to get work done on campus. They also find it to be a second home, as some students will often take naps while working or eating their lunches and eat dinners there during finals week.

Great Gyms

Occidental offers two gyms available for free to students. One is open from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm and has great equipment. It also has tons of tvs. The other gym is a lot smaller, but is open 24 hours and serves its purpose to those stressed out during late night cram-sessions. They are both kept very clean and are never overcrowded The only negative is that the basketball court and pool are often occupied by the sports teams and not open students very often.

Small, but Many Facilities

The campus is absolutely beautiful. The buildings are quintessential Southern California College style, so much so that movies and television shows are frequently filmed at Oxy. The library, Johnson Student Center, and the gym are all adequate, but their size reflects the size of the Oxy community...which is small, very small. But machines are always available in the gym and they're updated every 3-5 years or so. It's never completely taken over by athletes and there are big flat screens to make your workouts a little more bearable. If the library doesn't have the book you need for a paper, chances are they will be able to get it for you. Like I said, many of the facilities are small here at Oxy but there is no reason for them to be any bigger.

Gyms

We have an outdoor pool, which is great in so. cal. They just built a new gym and the soccer fields are awesome. The food is great and the library is already nice, but it is going to be renovated soon.
