College Prowler Take

While no campus is 100 percent crime-free, Occidental certainly feels safe and has no major problems with crime or safety. The only complaints that arise come from students who wish that their calls could be responded to sooner. Because of the small size of the school, Campus Safety is able to field fewer officers, which allows for a greater personal relationship and a greater feeling of community on campus, which in turn leads most students to feel even safer amongst one another.

This feeling of community is extremely positive, although quite a few expressed that it made it harder to get away with policy violations as well. Students have to remember that safety also starts with them. Make intelligent decisions, and always be aware of your surroundings. When you are out and about, travel with a friend—this is not only for girls, but for guys, too. It must be emphasized that crime still happens at Occidental. There are occasions of break-ins, and items such as backpacks and laptops get stolen, so always keep an eye on your valuables and never let anyone into the residence halls that you don’t know. While Oxy does have a relatively low number of rape cases, even one is too many, and the school has recently enacted a more stringent rape policy and has put into place many programs such as Project SAFE (Sexual Assault Free Environment) to combat the issue. Many students had complaints about the health services staff, but they felt that the services offered were satisfactory. Usual complaints were listed as long waiting times, problems with getting the desired care for illnesses, or issues that were anything beyond the common college health issues.

The Health Center definitely needs to be bigger, but what they do offer is great. I especially appreciate the counseling services that are there for the students.

I wish I knew a little more about the contraceptives that they gave us. I asked some questions about the birth control patch from things I had read, and they had no idea what I was talking about.

I’m still alive, and I’ve gotten pretty sick, so I guess I can’t complain. They even helped me out when I got the chicken pox.

I’ve never had a problem with the Health Center, but I do hear a lot of people complain about it all the time. They are incredibly limited in what they can do, but when I’ve been sick with the flu and stuff, they’ve hooked me up pretty well.

I only go to the Health Center if I absolutely have to. They can’t do very much, and they don’t seem very responsive to what I have to say at all.

Students at Occidental have worked to create and implement a much stricter rape policy for the campus.

The Emmons Health Center has the PASS (Promoting Awareness of Substances and Sexuality) program that educates and provides counseling and referral in the areas of sexuality, STD/HIV, family planning, and alcohol and drug use to Occidental students.
