College Prowler Take
There are many college students across the country that always complain that the city or town that their college is in is boring. Well, this is Los Angeles, and Oxy is right in the middle of it. There is never a lack of entertainment or variety, and it’s easy to find any kind of nightlife to suit your taste. Whether it’s crazy parties all night long or mellow evenings at a bar or a coffeehouse, there’s no reason to ever be bored. Admittedly, getting around without a car is difficult, but it is still possible, and you can always make sure that you make friends with people that have cars. Not having a car should not be a deterrent from going out and experiencing some of the most amazing club scenes around. So take advantage of attending a school in a city with a happening nightlife scene. Los Angeles is one of the top cities in the United States for fun and entertainment. Just make sure that having fun does not completely consume you, and you don’t forget about the most important thing, which are your grades. As long as you balance your social life and studies, going to school in Los Angeles should be a very rewarding experience.

There are some cool bars around...
There are some cool bars around the neighborhood, like York, The Chalet, and Italiano's, a restaurant/bar that people love. And, the great thing about living in LA is that you can venture outside the neighborhood and check out the rest of the city! Clubs are fine for the over-21 crowd, but in LA they are too expensive and trendy. There are plenty of dive bars around Los Angeles that are really fun but don't offer the experience of being puked on by Lindsay Lohan.

The party scene here looks very different from a big university frat scene, which, to us, is a very good thing. All the off-campus housing is within a few blocks of campus, so you never have to walk far to a party or between parties. There is the occasional dead weekend, but it's never a problem because we're in LA! The Echo on Sunset is really close, really funky, and most nights are 18+.

Part of the reason I transferred...
Part of the reason I transferred to Occidental was to be in LA for the nightlife. I made a really good choice when I did. I’ve made a lot of good friends and met some really hot guys going to bars and clubs here that I could never have met at my old school. |

It’s good to be so close to so many good party areas in Los Angeles. Most places feel safe enough that even a girl like me can go with another girl and feel okay about the whole situation, and still have a lot of fun, too. |

I got a fake ID my freshman year, and it was so worth it. The bars all around here are awesome, and the people I meet there are even better. |

In Los Angeles, there are far too many good clubs to describe in one section of a book. No matter where you go, there is a cool, fun place to party, each with its own personality, cool music, and crazy hook to get you in.

Located in the famous Sunset Strip, everyone has to go to Red Rock to see how loud and shameless partying can possibly be. Red-blooded frat boys and sorority sweethearts scope the scene until they can’t stand anymore. Ask any bartender what his or her specialty is, and they’ll allude to more than their drink-making talents. The large array of imported beers is also a popular feature, along with the Snakebite. Red Rock 8782 Sunset Blvd. West Hollywod (310) 854-0710
The Ivar is one of the many clubs that is replacing the Sunset Strip with Hollywood as the place to party in LA. Attire is very casual, in a very elegant setting. The parties can get incredibly crazy, and this club is consistently rated as one of the best. Parking is available near the club for $10–$20. Incredibly good drinks mixed with an interesting far East theme of dragons and Buddha make this a really fun bar to hang out at. While very crowded, the atmosphere and cool, hipster vibe earn the 4100 Bar rave reviews, and the recommendations of many Oxy students. 4100 Bar 4100 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles (323) 666-4460
This bar with a cave-like appeal is cozy for night owls who like to keep things simple. Amber lanterns, a blazing fireplace, cushy booths dotted with throw pillows, and cheesy landscape oil paintings straight out of Bob Ross’ “Joy of Painting” collection provide warmth and coziness, two attributes not always associated with LA’s nightlife scene. The Chalet 1630 Colorado Blvd. Los Angeles (323) 258-8800
What to Do if You're Not 21
There’s a definite freestyle fellowship in this 18-and-over club that extends from the DJs and performers to an audience comprised of b-boy cats and funky felines. This vibrant vibe creates an abstract ambience where anything can and does happen on the stage and the dance floor. The Echo 1822 W Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles (213) 413-8200
