Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Those that live off campus have large benefits and certain drawbacks that must be considered. Many of those who live off campus enjoy the freedom they have and their own private, quiet space, but dislike having to commute to school. While there are many options within a few blocks of campus, most students still find themselves at least 15 minutes away from school. The advantages include not having to buy a meal plan, cheaper rent, and having the freedom to party and be loud without worrying about being written up, or having Campus Safety break up the party.

Living off campus also brings about several other responsibilities, which is probably commonly overlooked when students decide that they want to live off campus. You have to be concerned with a lease and monthly rent. There are also bills such as gas and electric. Students that live off campus most likely are not on a meal plan, so supplying and cooking your own food becomes a concern. With all of these new responsibilities, you have to make sure that you are budgeting properly. If there were more options within a few blocks of campus, living off campus would be equal in benefits and disadvantages to living on campus.

Occidental College Is Located Within a Large Neighborhood.

Students aren't allowed to live off-campus until they're juniors. Although I haven't lived off-campus, I know that most off-campus houses are sports or Greek houses. They require you apply to live in those houses. Occidental is located in the heart of a neighborhood, so there are many houses within walking distance to the campus. There are many restaurants and shops students can go just outside the neighborhood.

Many Options

There are a plethora of houses directly next to and very close to the campus. It takes a bit of searching but is easy to find a great place.

Off Campus

I'm not sure about how hard it is to live off campus. You are required to live on campus through your junior year now, so I haven't really looked into. A couple of my olde friends live off campus and seem to like it though.
