Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

An overwhelming majority of students agree that being part of a fraternity or sorority isn’t a necessary part of your experience at OSU. In fact, many students look down on Greek organizations, and sometimes on those who join them. One of the biggest problems with OSU’s Greek life is its lack of real contribution to the city. That, along with many violations and infractions (that can put a Greek house in probationary status), doesn’t bode well for their image. The houses may look magnificent along the streets off campus, but for many, their appeal stops at the door.

There’s a lot of temptation to join a fraternity or sorority when you first get to school, and many of the Greek organizations will actively try to recruit from the incoming class. Remember that Greek status isn’t necessary to have an active social life at OSU, however. Many choose to join for the parties alone, though you don’t necessarily have to be in a fraternity or sorority to party with them. If you’re looking for service activities, however, there are some organizations that do this well. Tau Beta Pi, for instance, puts on the annual “Beat Michigan 5K” (www.beatmichigan5k.org) race to raise funds for a local food pantry. Overall, however, Greek Life occupies a very specific niche at OSU; if you’re not sure whether or not it’s for you, it’s wise to check out what the Greeks have to say, and talk to other students about the image and opportunities that come along with a fraternity or sorority. If nothing else, there’s probably a free T-shirt in it for you.

OSU Greek Life

So far, in my experiences here, the Greek life is kind of all about partying. I've had a couple run-ins with Greeks, and they're not bad people, very fun. To be honest, they're cool but it's not really like they're helping out the community or anything, except for some nice relaxation and fun.

Greeks Are Semi Important

Greek life is definitely popular. I constantly get asked if I'm in a sorority. However, the school definitely doesn't revolve around it. Fraternity parties are lots of fun if you're looking for a bit of fun on a Friday night. There are tons of fraternities and sororities, all of them different so if you're interested you'll find one you fit into. If you're not interested in greek life, you have nothing to worry about. Plenty of people aren't involved. Many sororities require you to live in the house at least one year, which may be a disadvantage to some people. Their rules are pretty strict but the houses are really nice because they can't throw parties.
