College Prowler Take

Concerts, theatres, a zoo, malls, museums, and just about anything else can be found within the confines of Columbus. There are always numerous activities and events taking place, giving residents a variety of entertainment options to choose from. The Buckeye vibe permeates all of the surrounding area, and students see Columbus as a friendly town. Don’t be fooled by the Midwest stigma of blandness or ignorance—most of the townies are glad to see you, and they will greet you with a smile. Columbus also sees a surprising number of cultural and entertainment events each year. With a wide variety of music scenes, numerous touring theater groups, and local sports teams, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The city is also very close—albeit, by vehicle—to cities such as Cleveland and Cincinnati, which provide even more activities. A weekend trip to one of these cities is not at all out of the question and will allow you to see concerts and sporting events you might have missed otherwise.

You cannot discuss the local atmosphere without discussing Buckeye sports. Foremost of these is football, obviously, and during football Saturdays, everyone watches the game—and we mean everyone. If you’re looking to get shopping done, game day is the perfect time to do it. Be sure to get back in before the game ends, however, since roads in Columbus become massive parking lots as 105,000 people try to drive home afterward.

There are five concert venues, three major shopping malls, and a lot of cool museums such as the COSI Science Center and the Riffe Art Gallery downtown. There is an area of town called the Short North that has a lot of really funky art galleries, too. For a small, Midwestern city, it’s pretty cultured and sophisticated.

Columbus is a great town; there’s always something to do, or so I hear. I actually haven’t had much of a reason to venture off campus, since virtually everything I need is right here. I’ve got access to Target and the movies by way of COTA, and that’s all I really need.

Every once in a while, a few famous people might come to the clubs or throw a concert. Other than that, you will have to go out and look for fun—just don’t get in trouble doing it.

Take a trip downtown, just to visit. You can even take a trip to a different city on the weekends—Cincinnati is about an hour and a half away from Columbus, Dayton is an hour away, and Cleveland is about two or three hours away.

Columbus is the perfect little big city. I’m sure there are other schools around, but who cares when you go to Ohio State? Stay out of dark alleys and Chittenden, and visit the Newport—it is the longest-running rock club in America!
