Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Taking in a meal at the dining halls, while not the best culinary experience, is certainly tolerable. A wide variety of food appears to be what makes the dining halls popular with students, and Shively is definitely a favorite among students thanks to its selection of hand-scooped ice cream. Boyd, though, is fast on the heels of Shively as the most popular dining hall because of its addition of paninis, wraps, salads, and sushi to its menu. Hopefully, other dining halls will follow suit and ditch some of the fried foods for healthier alternatives.

A downside to dining at OU is the lack of 24-hour places to eat. The dining halls usually close at 7 p.m. So, for students with late classes, it can be tough to get dinner. However, there are markets that are open pretty late, and Grab n’ Go is very convenient for snatching a bagged lunch (too bad there’s not one uptown at Bromley). Though students may complain about the dining halls at one point or another, there’s no doubt that they’ll be missing it once they move off campus and start living on Easy Mac. Overall, the dining halls provide good deals for students—they’re convenient, the food is good, and changes are being made to accommodate vegetarians and those who want a healthier menu. If a tad too routine, as is the case with most University meal options, OU’s dining halls at least find some creative ways to keep their options fresh for students.

Ok but Repetitive

It's a dining hall.. what to you expect? Everything's been frozen and reheated to a lukewarm temperature. Our dining halls are getting remodeled though, so variety is increasing, along with cleanliness.

OK Food

The campus food is alright when you first experience it. But there is not a lot of variety usually and you are eating the same things a lot of the time. I am a vegetarian and my school is supposed to have very vegan friendly meals, but the are the same a lot of the time and I personally see myself just getting salad all of the time.

Dining

It is okay food in some of the dining halls but i wish the lines would go by faster and the dining halls would extend their hours so every one can get food.

Did You Know?
  • Think you're too busy to eat? Think again. Shively, Boyd, and Nelson Dining Halls all offer Grab n' Go, an à la carte lines that allows students to pack lunches instead of sitting down to eat. While the other two Grab n' Gos only offer regular menu items, the newly-revamped Boyd Grab 'n Go offers sushi (made by a local restaurant), paninis, wraps, and a large variety of salads.
  • Keep an eye out for dining hall theme nights, which have included Jimmy Buffett, Mardi Gras, Homecoming, and Hawaiian Luau themes in the past. Decked out in costumes, the employees serve theme-appropriate foods amid lavish decorations. It's cheesy, yes, but definitely fun, and the themed food is a nice break from the ordinary.
  • Over 800 students work for Dining Services and earn an average of $7.30 an hour, making it one of the highest paying jobs on campus.
  • Freshmen and sophomores are required to have a meal plan.
