Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s a good thing that students are required to live in the dorms their first two years; all new OU students are thrown into the same boat, facilitating social interaction and making the transition much easier. During their years in dorms, most students meet the friends with whom they’ll be sharing their entire college experience. Some even meet potential boyfriends and girlfriends. Suffice it to say, the dorms are a great experience for pretty much everyone, and it makes the first couple of years at college, which can be the most difficult and unsure, easier.

Thankfully, the residence halls are nice at OU—they are clean, convenient, safe, and comfortable. While South Green is kind of a walk from the main part of campus, people still seem to enjoy their experiences there, especially those living in the Front Four. Another great thing about living in dorms is the amenities. Students totally get hooked up with a mini-fridge and a microwave, which is more than what many colleges have to offer. A downside to dorm life are the rules, such as no boys in female-only halls after a certain time, no candles, all guests must be escorted, and so on. Though these are for everyone’s safety, it can still be frustrating to have to worry about sneaking a girl or guy into your room when you have so many other freedoms. But, in all, residence life is great, especially when compared to the stresses of bills, landlords, cleaning, and other responsibilities that come when you move off campus.

Live on East Green

The freshman dorms at Ohio University aren't the best, but once you become an upperclassmen the options get better. There are three major greens that students can live on, and the best one by far is East Green. It is close to many of the central locations on campus and features two renovated dorms – Shively and Lincoln – and two of the best dining halls – Jeff and Shively. I think East Green is also the most sociable of the greens as you can always find students out and about playing games outside or talking with friends.

Campus Life

I believe living on campus is one of the best things about college when you are a first or second year. When you live in the dorms you can meet your potential life-long friends, boyfriend, etc. It's also a great way to socialize.

Dorm Life and After

I absolutely loved living in the dorms freshmen year. They were large and very convenient to all buildings on campus. I also made the best friends I will every have living in the dorms. Sophomore year was all right because of the ease of being on campus, but now that I live off of campus I wouldn't trade it for anything. The dorms sophomore year were too small and only had one window so we couldn't get air to circulate since that window was blocked by an air conditioner that was broken more than half the year. Everyone in the dorm was very friendly, though, and they made living in the dorms worthwhile.
