Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
Students seem to be split on the diversity issue at OU. It’s true that OU may be a lot more diverse than other campuses, especially ones in rural Ohio, but when it comes down to it, most students feel that diversity is a weak point of the University. There is a huge gap between the population of whites and minorities, which the University is hoping to improve, especially with the election of a minority president. One good thing about the campus, when it comes to diversity, is the influx of students studying from abroad. Many students from all over the world come to OU to study, bringing their language and culture into the classrooms. It’s a great experience to share a class with someone studying abroad—definitely take the opportunity to ask questions and learn about their lives as students in another country. But, international students alone cannot make up for the lack of minorities, whether religious or racial, in the student population. The campus is open to sexual and political minorities, though.

The campus is not very diverse. There are about 18,000 white people and the rest are divided up into [small percentages]. The biggest population is probably African American, followed by Asian, then Middle Eastern. Although when I was in my last quarter, the administrators were trying to diversify the campus. |

I think our campus is pretty diverse. I guess it depends who you ask. But, I’ve been exposed to so many different people who have so many different backgrounds, and I think that’s what makes OU so interesting. |

Just walking to class, I think most people would agree that OU is a very diverse campus. It goes from one extreme to another. |

When it comes to economic status at OU, it’s basically the only area where diversity kicks in. You’ll meet students who receive a steady allowance from their rich daddies, as well as students from far away slums and tenament buildings.
