Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When it comes to safety and security, it’s hard for many students to imagine a campus that is safer than OU. Though there are occurrences of crime like any other place, everyone agrees that OU is generally a safe campus for men and women. In addition to city police, OU has its own police department, so patrolling officers are a pretty common sight, which can be comforting when you’re walking home from a night class. Also, all of the residence halls require either a key or a swiped ID to enter, which is a reassurance that you will sleep safe and sound. And in the female-only dorms, all males must be accompanied by a resident upon entry.

While crimes do happen, from theft to an assault, using common sense is the best advice—don’t walk alone at night, avoid drunken confrontations, and lock your doors. Take advantage of the safety services OU has to offer; they’re there to keep you safe. With level-headed thinking, adherence to proper precautions, and a willingness to utilize the services provided to them, students are able to enjoy their college years at OU without worry or fear.

Very Well Protected

In the past with emergencies, the campus police system alerts the entire student body via text messages, e-mails and phone calls so people know to take precautions.

Never Scared

Being here on campus i feel safe! It is a small town with very nice people. The population here in Athens is half of the college students. I would not mind walking by myself at night because I do not feel scared at all. On the weekends they have police circling around everywhere.

Be Smart at Night

The campus is very safe during the day. Most students come from smaller communities so there's no paranoia about crime that you'll find in big cities. There are occassional reported rapes though, so make sure you are not wandering by yourself off campus in the middle of the night.
