College Prowler Take

One of the best parts of Athens is the large variety of unique and fun restaurants. Whether you crave Greek, Chinese, Mexican, or good old American, there is a restaurant somewhere in Athens that caters to every palate. The Blue Gator menu even offers Louisiana-style crawfish, jambalaya, and yes, alligator. There is a lot of variety for vegetarians or those who are healthier eaters, thanks to places like Casa Nueva, Pita Pit, and Bagel Street Deli.

Athens’ eateries are definitely one of the highlights of going to Ohio University. The food is a great alternative to the usual chain restaurants, though you can find those as well in the form of Damon’s, Ruby Tuesday, Bob Evans, and Buffalo Wild Wings. One minor problem can be finding a “classy” restaurant for special dates or occasions. Seven Sauces and Stephen’s are the only upscale restaurants uptown, but they do offer a great selection of steaks, seafood, and other higher-priced dishes. And the menus constantly change to ensure a wide selection. If you do find yourself getting tired of Athens and are craving the familiarity of a chain-restaurant menu, Lancaster is only about 40 miles away. But more than likely, you’ll never have to head that way for a great meal.

Uptown there was a variety of [places] to choose from. Goodfella’s and Courtside both have great pizza. The Chinese place was awesome if you were in the mood for that. I also really like Brenan’s for bagels, nice sandwiches, and smoothies. And, of course you can’t forget D.P. Dough, which is so good. The restaurants off campus definitely grew during the four years I was there. At first, there didn’t seem to be much to choose from besides Bob Evan’s. Now, there are a plethora of options.

Uptown Athens offers a very wide selection of dining from fast food to sushi. Popular places include Pita Pit, D.P. Dough, and BW-3’s. There are places for take out, as well as sit-down eateries such as Skippers.

There are many small eateries if you would decide to try non dining hall food. Local favorites are Ali Baba’s (gyros), Burrito Buggy, Bagel Street Deli, the Diner, Tomatillas, Rio Grande, Buffalo Wild Wings, Lui Lui’s, Tuscano’s, Stephen’s, Seven Sauces, Pita Pit , and the hot dog vendor just to name a few of my favorites. However, although these are favorites of mine—I would have to recommend trying all these places to judge for yourself.

We have Souvlaki’s, which has great gyros, and Burrito Buggy, which has great Mexican food. Courtside and Goodfella’s both have really good pizza. We also have D.P. Dough, Pita Pit and Jimmy John’s, which are chains, but I think they are pretty concentrated in college towns (and they make great late-night snacks).

Athens has great food when it comes to everyday eating, but there aren’t necessarily a lot of ‘nice’ restaurants to go to. We have your typical fast food and pizza chains, as well as some places that are unique to Athens. World’s Best Bagels and Bagel Street Deli have great signature sandwiches.
