Ahh, off-campus housing. Finally, you can have your own keg party, cook your own meals, sleep in a real bed, and most importantly to OU students, have a porch! But, with the newfound freedom comes bills, bugs, bats, and, most dreaded of all, Athens landlords. Some landlords treat their tenants with respect and courtesy (like L'Hereux), but others are just plain lousy, ignoring maintenance problems and even being downright mean to tenants. The best way to avoid a nasty landlord or house is to ask current tenants about the living conditions. Also, make sure to ask the rental companies about move-in/out dates and times, which have been known to cause a lot of stress for students (one rental company requires tenants to be completely moved out of their house only three hours after they graduate).

The houses on campus are generally nice, although rent can be a little steep, especially the closer you get to Court Street. But, another great option for students is apartment complexes like University Courtyard and Riverpark. While UC is a good distance from campus, buses transport students to and from the apartments, and the living conditions and amenities are awesome (computer access, a gym, a pool). Make sure to take these into consideration when looking for a house. Most importantly, as all students attest, start the search early. Off-campus housing can be an absolute blast, just make sure to do your homework to avoid an uncomfortable living situation.
