College Prowler Take
When it comes to safety and security, it’s hard for many students to imagine a campus that is safer than OU. Though there are occurrences of crime like any other place, everyone agrees that OU is generally a safe campus for men and women. In addition to city police, OU has its own police department, so patrolling officers are a pretty common sight, which can be comforting when you’re walking home from a night class. Also, all of the residence halls require either a key or a swiped ID to enter, which is a reassurance that you will sleep safe and sound. And in the female-only dorms, all males must be accompanied by a resident upon entry. While crimes do happen, from theft to an assault, using common sense is the best advice—don’t walk alone at night, avoid drunken confrontations, and lock your doors. Take advantage of the safety services OU has to offer; they’re there to keep you safe. With level-headed thinking, adherence to proper precautions, and a willingness to utilize the services provided to them, students are able to enjoy their college years at OU without worry or fear.

OU is much safer than other campuses in Ohio, mostly because it's the off-campus environment at other schools that causes problems. Schools such as OSU and UC, which have urban crime problems, don't compare to the safer, more suburban atmosphere of OU. Just use common sense, and you'll see that the Athens PD and OUPD are just here for safety. Halloween is the only time that things can get iffy, but when the population of a town more than doubles, I guess that comes with the territory.

For the most part, I would say OU is a very safe campus. Everything is so close that walking alone at night never feels dangerous. The one thing that did bother me, though, was seeing girls running at night with their headphones on. You still need to be a little precautious. |

Campus is relatively safe, with the exception of a few random incidents that occur, like at any other college. I feel very safe at Ohio University, especially since I have attended Ohio State University, which is a different story. |

As a woman, I would not recommend walking alone at night because, as with anyplace, it’s not 100 percent crime free. |

Fortunately, OU is a safe campus and the police departments of Athens and Ohio University make sure to stay in eyesight at all hours of the day and into the late evening to continue the feeling of safety. |
