College Prowler Take
Rain, rain, and more rain. The wet stuff epitomizes Athens’ weather, and not just in the spring. It rains in Athens year round, but thankfully, it’s really only constant in the springtime. Students agree that you should never leave home without an umbrella because the rainstorms can be completely random and without warning, not to mention torrential. Some students even go as far as to say, you should own a fleet of umbrellas, just so wherever you are, there’s one handy. That may be a bit overboard, but as stated above: it rains. It rains and it rains and it rains. But, other than showers, the weather is pleasant and typical to Ohio. If you don’t like rain, then maybe OU isn’t the best choice. But, the rest of the weather is decent and predictable for the season. The rain does, after all, help the gorgeous flowers that pop up all over campus in spring. Just make sure to bring an umbrella, rain coat (OU rain pullovers are available at bookstores), and make sure to layer clothes; it may be cold outside, but it can be assured that the heat is blasting in the classroom buildings. Stay on your toes as Mother Nature throws a few curves your way. Students Speak Out

The weather varies in Athens. It can be 90 degrees and sunny one day, and the next day it will be 60 degrees and rainy. It also gets very cold in the winter, so pack plenty of warm clothing. |

The weather is hot and humid in the spring, summer, fall, and it’s cold in the winter. I would suggest a warm coat year round because it’s hard to tell when the temperature will suddenly drop. There are usually a couple days of snow in the winter as well. |

I was told my first year that it is important to bring raincoats and umbrellas because it rains all the time. My first year, it probably rained about five times, and I thought these people who told me it rained a lot were crazy. Well, after that year, my next four years were plagued with plenty of rain. So make sure to bring an umbrella. In fact, bring more than one. It is highly likely that you will leave your umbrella in one of three places: a classroom, the bar, or someone’s house. By the time I graduated I had a nice collection of about five umbrellas and only one was mine. On another note, living in Southeast Ohio, you will be in for rainy springs, extremely hot summers, a nice mediocre fall, and a harsh winter, but only every other year. |

Bring your umbrella. It rains here a lot; especially in the spring, so make sure you bring an umbrella. I would also recommend keeping clothes for all seasons here at all times. You’ll find that, in the dead of winter, you’re freezing on the way to class, but once you get inside the building, the heat is cranked up so high that you almost need to strip down to a tank top to be comfortable. And the same is true in the summer; you roast on your way to class and then freeze once you get there because the air-conditioning is cranked up. And you’ll also find that it might be 80 degrees one day and 40 degrees the next. So layers are key to dressing comfortably here. Be prepared for anything, all the time! |

It’s Ohio weather, so you never know! Definitely be prepared for all types of conditions. I would often carry an umbrella with me, just in case. |
