Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Ohio Wesleyan athletics do not get nearly the amount of respect or attention that they deserve. OWU has claimed the all-sports trophy in the North Coast Athletic Conference in an astounding seven of the last twelve years. Its performance doesn’t stop at the national level either, as they are ranked in the top 20 in the Sears Director’s Cup for national D-III athletic programs. Highlights include the men’s and women’s soccer programs, which have each won the national championships, and the highly-ranked men’s lacrosse program. Sadly, student support for athletics is lacking. While some of the big events can draw large student crowds, the rest of the year it becomes commonplace to see more parents in the stands than students.

A very large portion of the student body chooses to take advantage of opportunities to get involved with intramurals or club sports. Intramurals offer students a chance to compete against their fellow OWU students, whereas club sports like rugby and ultimate Frisbee will actively compete against other colleges. Surveys have shown that the figure could be as high as 75 percent of students that compete in one of these sports during their four years at OWU. If you are looking for a school that will offer you a fantastic time in the stands cheering on your team, OWU may not fit the bill, but if you are looking for an opportunity to competitively play a sport in your free time, OWU might be worth taking a look at.

Sports Have Room for Improvement

Most events have poor attendance, other than large events such as a rival soccer or lacrosse match. The teams are pretty competitive and have dedicated. The workout facilities could use some major updating.

Sports Are Good

there are a lot of student athletes. some of the teams arent that great, football is pretty bad but we have done very well in other sports like track and field, basketball and field hockey. most student athletes are very dedicated and teams seem to be close with eachother.

Most Popular Sports

Lacrosse and soccer are by far the most popular sports at Ohio Wesleyan. Ohio Wesleyan is nationally-renowned, at least in the D-III world, for its lacrosse program. The men’s team has won four NCAC championships in the last five seasons. Ohio Wesleyan also has amazing men’s and women’s soccer programs. The men’s team won the NCAA Division III Championship in 1998, and the women won the title in 2001 and 2002.

Most Overlooked Teams

The women’s softball team has won the conference championship each of the last two years and is looking better than ever.

School Spirit

The amount of school spirit runs the entire spectrum from those that could care less up to the students that love the fact that they can call themselves OWU Battling Bishops. One of the biggest problems at OWU currently is its low freshman retention rate, as many new students just do not feel it is the right place for them and thus do not have much school spirit. However, if students actually take full advantage of all the opportunities at OWU and decide to get involved throughout their four years, it seems that many seniors love their school and wouldn’t trade their experiences for the world. School spirit at OWU, for the average student, develops very slowly but can become incredibly strong. The only drawback is that many times, this spirit doesn’t become fully developed until their last semester, causing them to wish they would have had more time to immerse themselves in everything the institution offers. Overall, everybody from the school needs to work together in order to foster and strengthen school spirit in students as soon as they enter their freshman year.

Getting Tickets

It is very easy to get tickets to every sporting event because they are not that popular at OWU. Many of them, such as basketball games, are free for students to attend, and other sports will not charge more than a couple of dollars.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The quiet and serene nature of the campus allows students to take a walk wherever they want around campus. Some of the best places include up and down the Jaywalk (student slang for the James A. Young Memorial Walkway), or just through the lawns by Gray Chapel.
