Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The dorm you choose is incredibly important, as it will be your home for nine months of the year. Welch Hall is the honors hall and requires an application process to get into. Stuyvesant Hall or Stuy (pronounced “Stie”) is the dorm known for constant parties throughout the rooms and sometimes even hallways. It always proves to be a good time, but should not be confused with the ideal study place. Although Hayes Hall is known as an all-girls hall, this should not imply at all that there is a lack of gentlemen in the dorm, as they constantly visit.

Alternatives to the halls are the small living units (SLUs) and fraternities. The SLUs are centralized houses on campus with a common theme for interested students. They offer a full kitchen, common rooms, and bedrooms for their residents linked by a common interest like international culture or creative arts. The fraternities are an option for the males only, but they can be a great place to live in the mansion-style arrangements with your fraternity brothers. Every student probably fits into one residence area or another. It all depends on the type of environment you want to live in. Regardless of where you live, it could prove very rewarding to get to know your RA and figure out whether they will be strict or lenient. The majority of students will live in the residence halls for their entire tenure at OWU, so it is important to find out what place you can be happy to call home.

The Year One Program Is Not a Bad Option for OWU Freshman

I had a great first year in the Freshman dorms at OWU. The year one program is great and there many great off campus opportunities for the students such as seeing the Broadway touring company perform at the Ohio Theater in Columbus and seeing a the Columbus Crew play a game. The dorms themselves are kept very clean and I felt like I got to know the other residents on my floor.

It Depends What Dorm You're in

There are several dorms to choose from at Ohio Wesleyan University. Smith and Welch are probably the best in terms of cleanliness and proximity to dining halls, since both of them have the main dining halls in the building. Stuyvesant hall is the dirtiest, oldest, loudest, smelliest dorm on campus, but it has the best social atmosphere; everyone has their door open, their is music flowing through the hallways. The mix of girls perfume and smelly boys isn't that bad after a couple of weeks. Thompson and Bashford are pretty generic...nothing special about them. However now that some of the fraternities have drunk their way off campus, their houses have been turned into senior living quarters; very spacious and clean. There is an apartment complex that they offer as well, but unless you are a really quiet person, who hates listening to music, then thats not the place for you.

Love Living on Campus

Living on campus is a great experience for everyone on campus. My freshman year I lived in Thomson where I not only saw my dorm mates often but ended up forming close friendships with many of them. The RA's were very easy going but knew when to be serious.

I currently now live in Hayes where there is still that community feeling in my dorm. The RA's do not treat you like children but treat you like adults who have to respect each other. I have friends who live in Smith, Stuyvesant, YearOne, etc and they tell me how much they enjoy living in their dorms.

With the exception of Stuyvesant and a few SLU's, the dorms are in pretty good shape. Not once have I felt that the building was gonna collapse on me nor was I concerned with the security of the building.

Its 60 apartments are a quiet alternative to living in the dorms, but it is over a mile from the main academic buildings of campus.
  • SLU – The Small Living Units (SLUs) are an alternative to dorm living for students after their freshman year. Each SLU is a University- owned house very centrally located between the dorms and academic buildings. The individual SLUs each have a common theme that the residents are interested in and focus service events on. Examples of Small Living Units include the House of Black Culture, focusing on African American history and culture, or the House of Thought which focuses on applying ancient philosophical teachings to everyday life.
