OWU Public Safety (PS) takes their job very seriously, some students might say even too seriously. Their presence is very visible on campus, especially at night. Some students feel that they aren’t really there to help them as much as “catch them” doing something wrong. As a whole, though, PS is filled with people with genuine concern for the well-being of the student body. This leads to them being very strict, especially when it comes to drugs or drinking. In some instances, students feel that they waste their time on harassing a student having a drink when they could be patrolling for more dangerous occurrences on campus.The violations for drinking consist of a small fine and being asked to take a course on alcohol usage. Recurring violations result in steeper fines and penalties that could ultimately lead to expulsion. Minor problems, such as parking violations, can be cleared by just paying a small fine. However, it could turn into a problem if you get numerous violations and do not pay.

Students feel very safe on campus and most have a positive relationship with Public Safety, as well as the local police. The city fire station is just across the street, which can get annoying because of the sirens all the time, but it gives a sense of security to people. The city police do not involve themselves with the students except for the occasional off-campus party where they may warn them to quiet down, but they usually will not do anything drastic.

Have Fun but Be Safe

If an underage student has drank to the point of alcohol poisoning, there is no punishment. Our RAs and Public Safety Officers care more about your health and wellbeing rather than putting the iron fit upon the student and scaring them away from making the smarter choice of getting help. Besides, after alcohol poisoning, who would want to party that hard again anyway?

Public Safety

The campus police are pretty strict when it comes to drinking and drug-use. It is understandable when it comes to drugs, they have a policy where if they even suspect pot, they will call in the local police department and students can be kicked out depending on the type of drug. As far as drinking, they are a bit more lenient on that, however if you are caught they will make sure that you go through a "trial" of sorts. Luckily, they rarely bust people unless an RA catches you. Just be smart!

Do not get caught with a beer in your hand when you are underage. you will get written up, which will go on your record, which will be sent to whatever you apply to next. Don't do drugs, period! but if you are one of those pot smoking teens, even though you know its illegal, at least be smart enough to know not to smoke in the dorms. There are fire alarms, and it will waft through the whole hallway. but overall strictness is not that bad, unless your talking about the city police...well then we're talking about a whole new ball game.
