Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The computer network is inconsistent on campus and can often be the cause of a lot of frustration within. Viruses and spam e-mails plague the OWU network causing slow connection speeds and can even, on occasion, shut it down entirely. The good news is that the computer network is a high priority with both the students and the administration. There are improvements in the works to expand the wireless network and accelerate the network speed. In fact, at the end of 2005, the student government invested in a new network firewall that will help keep out harmful things. The quality of the computer labs varies widely throughout the campus. The new science center and library have very modern and lightning-fast computers that work well almost all the time. The residential computer labs are not kept updated, and most run very slowly and do not work properly. The school unfortunately seems to ignore the needs of these labs to focus on the others.

Bringing your own computer to OWU is not a necessity but is definitely helpful. It not only gives you 24-hour access to a computer, but peace of mind that you are free from the glitches and viruses that often curse the public computers. There are eight different labs available for use on campus, but because of the inconsistency of the network, most students would strongly recommend bringing your own computer. There is a good chance it will become your most valuable resource over your four years at OWU.

Wireless Network Slow to Start, but Works Well

Personally, in the first few days the WiFi network took forever to get connected on my computer, but it works perfectly now. I also knew people who had no problems getting connected to the OWU network at all.

The computers here are pretty fast. The computer lab in the library (the one most people go to) has about 30 computers. They are all in good condition and the lab is pretty quiet, making for a quiet place to study on campus. The printing here at OWU is a bit annoying as you have to sometimes modify the size of your documents and have to frequently ask the assistants for help. Also, you get a limit to 400 pages a semester free but after that you have to pay more. This can be a hinderance to many. The wireless connection is good all around campus, though you may have trouble if you own a Mac. A personal computer is fairly important but you can do well without one whereas a printer is pretty unnecessary

Could Be Better.

Let's face it, the science center gets all the nice stuff. They get MacBooks in one of their labs and they have their own library.

The library computers and dorm room microlabs have old Lenovo desktops that aren't too reliable. And the printers are always out of paper...

Most students have laptops, and it may be a good idea to have your own printer.
