Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Ohio Wesleyan prides itself on its diverse student body. It is in the top 10 in the U.S. for its percentage of international students. This is quite the opposite of the surrounding town of Delaware, which consists of a homogenous, conservative, white population. The international population of OWU gives the student body a new perspective on life, something that cannot be taught in a classroom. Diversity also exists within the political spectrum, as is seen when OWU hosts the nation’s oldest College Mock Convention for the party not in office every four years. Tense arguments between the many very politically-active students
are commonplace.

Many students do not even realize that OWU is still affiliated with the Methodist Church, as any religious connection or preference is not made apparent. Still, there are many students involved in a large array of different religions and denominations. The largest group is United Methodists, followed by other Christians, all of whom have their own student organizations. A somewhat large portion of Hindu and Muslim students also proudly call Ohio Wesleyan their home. The largest geographic group by far is Ohioans with students from the East Coast (collars popped and all) being second. Although quite diverse as a whole, a large group of OWU students proudly keep J.Crew, Ralph Lauren, and Lacoste in business.

Somewhat Diverse

For what most people consider diversity, there's lots: a whole gaggle of international students comes in every year, and there's lots of opportunities to get to know them. Unless they're sitting by themselves in their own little groups which, big surprise, they tend to do.

World Relations

Upon entering the grounds of Ohio Wesleyan University, one may not see it immediately-but as the student body leak into the street, corridors, and hallways-the diversity of OWU students are more than noticeable. Last year, 14% of attending students were international. The diversity for the American student of the black and asian population is fairly high in comparison to other schools as well. Additionally, our school encourages students to travel and study abroad. Dozens of seminars per year are scheduled to those interested in such actions. Overall, Ohio Wesleyan University is a college known to appreciate worldly relationships.

Predomintantly White

Obviously, the majority of people on campus are White Americans from the midwest. But, if you are a minority there are definitely enough people here for you to find people to fit in with. There are enough minorities with varying opinions that you could find people with similar interests.

Facts

Gay Pride

On campus, gays and bisexuals are mostly accepted, however that is definitely not to say that discrimination is nonexistent. Many situations may leave homosexuals left out or looked down upon, especially in the very conservative surrounding town of Delaware. A student organization, PRIDE, is working to increase GLBT awareness on campus.

Political Activity

The student body definitely has a very liberal slant, on average. Many students are politically active on campus throughout the entire political spectrum, however. Numerous left-leaning groups including ProgressOWU and College Democrats are beginning to be balanced out by the newly-formed College Republicans and other organizations.

Economic Status

Economic status seems to go all the way through the spectrum, from poor to multi-millionaire. Most students are middle-class to upper-middle-class.

Most Common Religions

Ohio Wesleyan is still affiliated with the United Methodist Church, although the average OWU student probably does not even know this. Catholicism is another popular religion. The large proportion of international students also brings some new understanding of religions that otherwise would never be exposed to the town, including Hinduism and Buddhism.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Many minority organizations call OWU their home. The most prominent and active on campus include the Student Union on Black Awareness, Sangam, VIVA, Sisters United, and Black Men of the Future.
