A Smaller School Opens up More Opportunities

Most of the Professors at OWU are excellent at what they do. They are passionate, helpful and determined to lead you to succeed. As long as you go to them for help in time, they will be willing to have one on one sessions with you. But mostly, students study in groups with each other rather than go to Professors for help. Also, Professors are easily available through email and most check and respond on weekends too.

The charm of a small school is that the Professor knows who you are and what you are like. The relationship is more personal and Professors are more in the picture of how to help you succeed as an individual rather than follow a standard set of steps for all students.

Diverse

We got about 10% international students on campus, which makes the university very diverse. Professors are excellent. Residents in town are friendly too, the cars will actually stop for students on the street.

Urban Legends
  • Ohio Wesleyan is filled with ghosts and spirits. There is a book being written about the numerous ghosts that haunt the many old buildings around campus and even pictures that seem to capture unusual “beings” throughout area.
  • There is a room in the basement of Stuyvesant Hall that has been boarded up for years. Legend has it that it was haunted and every student that lived there would hear sounds and see ghosts. The students were so spooked about living in that room that the former president of the University wanted to put it all to rest by spending one night in the room himself. He stayed there one night, emerged from the room in the morning, saying nothing about his stay, and promptly ordered that the room be boarded up indefinitely.
  • There is a story about Hiram Wills Perkins, an OWU professor in the early 1900s who was a hog farmer who provided food for the Union Army during the war. This venture resulted in him profiting quite nicely, so he wanted to give back by building a wonderful observatory facility for the school. He was there for the beginning of construction, but died before the building could be completed. Some people say that he still haunts the observatory with his name on it today because he is angry that he never got to use the telescope that he purchased for the University.
