College Prowler Take

For students looking for ways to stay active and fit, there are several alternative ways at ODU. For students who just want to work out at the gym, there is the 47th Street gym as well as the new Student Recreation Center, both of which feature equipment and courts for students to use. In addition, students have the option to take free fitness classes. As long as you show your ODU ID, you can come and take pillates, yoga, hip-hop cardio, cycling, and other themed classes designed to keep you in shape. In addition, ODU has an Outdoor Adventure Program that provides alternative and free or discounted outdoor activities.

Students who just enjoy watching athletics will be excited to know starting with the 2009-2010 school year, ODU will have a football team for the first time in years. There are also basketball, lacrosse, baseball, tennis, golf, soccer, field hockey, rowing, and sailing teams to watch and get involved with.

Soccer, basketball, and lacrosse are the major sports. Football is just starting next semester. Intramural football and basketball are big deals.

The varsity sports are Division I teams, and we just started up a new football program. The intramurals here are pretty popular for basketball.

They are a joke! The main sport at the moment is basketball, and the women's team is far better than the men's team, but the men's game has more butts in the seats than the women's.

The gyms are okay here. I’ve only been to the University Village Gym, though. I hope that when they redo the H&PE gym it’ll look better than it used to.

I always hear about ODU’s women’s basketball team, so I rarely think about any of the other teams. From what I know, we don’t have really cool sports or intramurals. That would be so much better than basketball.

  • Athletic Administration Gym - The Athletic Administration Gym, or Practice Gym, is only open for recreational team practice.
  • Student Recreation Center - Brand New
  • The University Fitness Center - The University Village Fitness Center, located in Webb, has a host of gymnastic equipment. One frustration is that before a student can go inside the gym, they have to take a rudimentary course (albeit free) on how to use the equipment.

Getting Tickets

You may want to camp out to get tickets for an ODU sporting event. Especially if you’re trying to get into a Lady Monarchs game.

Most Popular Sports

The Lady Monarchs basketball team—as they’ve been so prestigiously named—dominates our campus without a doubt. Field hockey also seems to be really popular—almost everyone knows a field hockey player. Men’s basketball may take a backseat to women’s, but it isn’t overlooked. The inaugural season of football starts in Fall 2009.

Most Overlooked Teams

Most of the teams at ODU get equal press by word of mouth and in the student-run newspaper the Mace and Crown.
