College Prowler Take

The campus is often strict in a stupid, Orwellian sort of way. The police dole out parking tickets like they aren’t really police, but simply meter maids, and faculty and staff have some type of third eye for delinquent behaviour. Old Dominion University’s Honor Code policy is also omnipresent—professors often require students to write the entire code (or at least the last few words) at the top of their papers and then sign it. If a student is even alleged to have cheated on a test, they are brought up on charges in ODU’s Honor Court, and they face possible expulsion or enrollment suspension. Campus faculty are strict on things like this to uphold the integrity of the students within the school—however, campus police, off and on campus, are way too involved in maintaining secure environments, like on 42nd Street.

42nd street is ODU’s party street, and no matter what the situation, police cars patrol up and down the streets, calling students out even if they are just walking in a large group. It’s almost as if beyond 42nd Street there are no cops—it’s like a ‘the world is flat’ sort of thing.

I think the ODU police department...

I think the ODU police department spends too much time trying to bust college kids for drinking and not enough time stopping real crime, like robberies. Although situations where drinking is involved can escalate, college kids shouldn't be denied their right to have fun, be young, and have a good time. I think that as long as they are being responsible, the campus police should focus their time on real crime instead of busting students for playing beer pong in back yards.

I have been to many parties on the outskirts of campus, where the police have walked into a drug- and alchohol-filled environment, and nothing was done about the situation. All that is usually asked is for the party to remain inside as a warning, and if they return, the party is over.

Campus police are very lenient when it comes to the students. They warn the student and help them rather then harass them.

I hate the police here. They all have attitudes. In fact, I hate it when people in power have attitudes or are snide. They are so ultimately condescending.
