Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The good thing about the guys and girls at ODU is that most of them are—on the average—extremely good-looking. None are horridly misfortuned, and a good number of them always look like they’ve walked out of a modeling gig or a GAP commercial. The student body is at its best in the summer when the girls and the guys shed some clothes and go out to tan or catch a few waves at the beach. This isn’t to say that everyone in attendance at ODU looks primped, proper, and ready to go every day of the year—there are students who could care less about their personal appearance. These are the students who attend classes with bed-wrecked hair and rock pajamas like they are going out of style. Although, a lot of the men look better that way than when they are all Prada'd.

The male-to-female ratio is pretty balanced here, so the chances for hookups are high, and flings as well. Although ODU isn’t a sexually loose campus, parties, clubs and other situations can be perfect for the proverbial one-night stand. Relationships are pretty big here, and so are rumors. Who is dating whom and what’s happening—these are topics of discussion for members of an inner circle of friends. But whether you’re looking for a fling or a relationship, you’ll most likely be happy with your options.

Commuters from Far and Wide

A large percentage of Old Dominion University's students are commuter students, and I've found that many of them don't tend to stick around campus too long. You'll see cute guys and girls around, but once the sun starts to set, you'll wonder where they went - they went home.

Additionally, with the influx of older people returning to college, the same is the case here at ODU.

Not Very Good

The gorls at this school can be very stuck up their own you know what, and the guys are just a**holes. Many of the guys are way short, so an average girl is out of luck.

Guys and Girls

There are a lot of good looking guys and girls on campus; however, I feel like it is hard to find genuine friends here. Sorority Girls/ Fraternity Guys usually are clicky. There are also groups of really "odd" people you'll see around campus. For the most part, people get along here but it's hard to find people to actually get close to.

Facts

Social Scene

It's tough trying to find someone to be friends with or to have a romantic interest in. And it's even tougher trying to approach that person once you've found them. It's no different at ODU—but luckily, a lot of the guys and girls here are very outgoing and easy to talk to. Very rarely will you find someone who doesn't want to be spoken to or who will stick a nose up at you for approaching them—especially in classes or at campus events. Most students here are big on going to the beach, and there is so much diversity that no one person will feel like they have nothing to contribute to a conversation when in a social environment.

Hookups or Relationships?

Like in any college setting, the spontaneous hookup occurs more often than not, mostly at parties and clubs. This isn't to suggest, however, that relationships are impossible. Couples can be seen walking through the fields in every direction.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

The best place to meet guys and girls will probably be in student organizations or student-sponsored events. In these settings, you know you have something in common with that person, and the environment is more informal than that of a classroom. Sure, University events will bring out a more diverse crowd, and clubs may have a larger sample and better selection of men and women, but in terms of approaching and meeting new people, student organizations and events are the easiest and safest ways to go. Another easy way to meet people is in class, but if you want to actually pay attention in class, this comes with an obvious drawback. At the same time, though, if there is a hot guy or a cute girl in one of your courses, odds are you can easily strike up a conversation just by asking a question apropos to the class or an assignment. But what if there are no guys or girls that push your button in any of your courses or activities? Well, you’re not doomed. There are a handful of clubs off campus where guys and girls alike flock to at least once a week. The Wave, for example, is a magnet for gay men (mostly) seeking partners on the dance floor or in life. Guys and girls looking to hook up should check out Excess or the Beach House near the oceanfront. If clubs aren’t your scene, then just wait until spring when the warm temperatures force the guys and girls to show a little skin. In fact, it’s not unnatural to see guys dressed in swimming trunks, ready to go to the beach at a moment’s notice, and girls wearing a bathing suit beneath their clothes.

Dress Code

ODU really doesn't have a set look or style. On any given day, you are likely to run into someone who looks like he or she stepped out of an A & F catalogue, a RocaWear advertisement or bed, bare feet or slippers included. And few people care. Most of students I know on campus say they can spot the freshmen because they are the ones who are dressed like they will be judged by their clothes. By students’ second or third years at ODU, many have developed their own personal style and just dress the way they feel most comfortable. Dress shirts, frayed jeans/skirts, graphic tees, and neck bands are usually standard, and Steve Madden and Diesel shoes are abundant. Since the temperature in Norfolk is so erratic, a lot of students dress so that they can be ready to go to the beach at any second. However, one thing is for certain—when it's time to party, girls and guys both pull out all their guns to look their best.
