Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Since the on-campus dining sucks so badly, it’s a good thing that there is a huge variety of places that students can frequent should they need to escape the horrors of ODU’s unsafe cafeteria food. There are a wide variety of restaurants for practically everyone, and genially priced as well (read: cheap). Almost every student you talk to—unless they don’t like Thai food—will tell you that Bangkok Garden is, well, bangin’. Go during lunch hours, and you’ll pay half of what you’d pay for the same portion at dinner (and get a small salad and an egg-roll on top of that). Doumar’s has tasty burgers for practically nothing, and Kincaid’s has tasty burgers in exchange for your life’s savings.

Even though MacArthur Center is kind of far away in respect to most of the restaurants near campus, it does have a nice selection of hotspots like Max & Erma’s and Chili’s. Not all students can afford to constantly go out to eat or drive/walk the distance to get to an actually okay restaurant, but when faced with the danger of on-campus dining, off-campus dining is such a refresher. And since most of the students at Old Dominion University have cars—or they most definitely know someone with a car—it’s not like they can’t make the trip to get to a restaurant. And even if they couldn’t, Ghent is close enough for them to walk, and with the variety of prices, it’s just not that bad.

Old Dominion University and Norfolk

There are a fair amount of dining choices out in Norfolk surrounding the school. This includes both chains and locally owned. There are a good amount of restaurants that offer ethnic foods at reasonable prices. If you don't want to hoof it you can always use the city's new transportation system.

Safety of the Students on Campus

I heard that students have guns on and off campus and I don't feel safe at all. Every body has the right to bear arms but I think that it should be limited to the outside life of the students, not on campus.

Not Bad at All

There's a whole two or so blocks that strictly have food, called Monarch Way. My favorite places to eat though are the hole in the wall restaurants that you wouldn't expect to be good but are amazing. There are many choices around here (fast food, sandwich, Thai, Chinese, Mexican), most of the time the hardest part is choosing. There are a some with discounts, not a lot that I've come by though, prices aren't terrible--but we're college students so we all wouldn't mind if everything was a bit cheaper.

Facts

Did You Know? Since the early 1920s, Doumar's has been serving Norfolk's clientele with homemade limeade drinks, BBQ sandwiches, and burgers. And for around $2 for a really tasty, simple cheeseburger, it is more than obvious why they're still around.
