Facts

Slang

  • 42nd - The infamous 42nd Street is known simply as 42nd.
  • BAL - Students refer to the Arts & Letters building as BAL
  • DIEHN - Much like BAL, the Diehn Fine & Performing arts building is referred to as DIEHN.
  • Ted/Ted’s Head/Constant - The Ted Constant Convocation Center. Here, sporting events take place as well as concerts and the infamous NEWPAGE class (as well as other courses). It’s the largest, most obvious building, other than ODU herself.
  • The Village/UV - No, it’s not the University Village. It’s the Village, or the UV.
  • Vabeach - Virginia Beach is the closest beach to ODU and the most popular during the summer months.
  • Webb - The Webb Center. This is the hub of student activities, containing cafeterias, arcades, and computer labs.

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School

  • Choose a major by your second year. If not, you’ll get behind in classes and end up taking random electives.
  • Don’t let counselors bully you into taking classes. Depending on your major, a lot of counselors will choose classes for you during PREVIEW. Don’t let that happen, or you might end up with a terrible schedule and get off to a bad start.
  • Talk to you professors if you have late papers. Most of them will allow you to turn them in anyway.
  • You don’t need to go to Freshman Orientation or the first part of PREVIEW, even though they say it is mandatory. It isn’t. And you don’t have to stay overnight if you’re not planning on living in the dorms.

Tips to Succeed

  • Choose classes that are at least somewhat enjoyable. Â
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions in classes.
  • Get to know your professors.
  • Go to class.
  • Let professors know if you’re having difficulty.
  • Mix gen eds with major-specific courses to keep semesters interesting.
  • Read the syllabus and keep up with assignments.
  • Research your professors on www.rateyourprofessor.com.

Urban Legends

  • Ever since Constant has opened, Madonna has been planning a concert there.
  • It’s a myth that most of ODU has been built on an old burial ground and that for this reason the crime rate is so high and people are shot at so often.

Traditions

  • Climbing the Lion - It’s tradition for seniors to climb the lion outside of Webb and get their picture taken with them on it before they graduate. The danger involved is that any senior that is caught will get expelled from the school.

School Spirit

Old Dominion might seem apathetic during the school year, what with school work and jobs piling up on each other, students barely have enough time for themselves. But when Homecoming comes around, students are eager to paint their faces and join in the parades and the fun. Sporting events like basketball and field hockey break the monotony of tedious school weeks, and masses of students crowd the stands of the Ted Constant Convocation Center or the stands in Foreman Field and cheer on their favorite teams.
