Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The most popular place to live off campus is University Gates Apartments (UGates). These apartments are very nice and are right across the street from campus, so students can either walk or drive to classes. UGates apartments include free parking, and you can get a unit with either shared or private bedrooms. Living room and bedroom furniture is also provided. These apartments tend to be nicer than the on-campus apartments, and UGates is in the process of adding more three- and four-bedroom apartments, which are even nicer. UGates does tend to get very loud on weekends and the units are not very soundproof, which bothers some people more than others. The Office of Student Activities offers a very helpful list of off-campus housing available in the Erie community and provides details and contact information for many different houses and apartments.

UGates is really the best option for most students, but keep in mind that there is constant snow in Erie, which can make getting to campus a little tough at times. Also, be sure to sign up early because UGates apartments go very fast. And don't get excited if you get put on the waiting list because it's still difficult to get an apartment. They will ask for a deposit and tell you where you stand on the waiting list, but they do not mention that you can actually move DOWN on the list if people who lived there previously and did not re-sign their lease decide they want to return. Also, if you don't get an apartment, be sure to ask for your deposit back since UGates will not do so unless you ask. People who don't mind driving in the snow may find a better deal farther from campus, but the drive will be no picnic. Overall, living off campus is not difficult to do at Behrend, and many students think it is the way to go.
