College Prowler Take

The University’s ResCom staff is very helpful with all of your computer needs. They are very knowledgeable with viruses and cleaning your computer up if you run into problems. The Ethernet connection in the dorms is normally very fast and reliable. Penn State’s WebMail and Course Management System (ANGEL) are very easy to use and help keep you organized.

The computer labs are a decent alternative to having your own computer. Though they do get crowded, there is almost always a computer available or a very short wait to use one. There is a lab located in every dorm area. However, the convenience and privacy of having your own computer in your dorm room is undeniable. The ability to communicate with your friends, classmates, and professors at all hours without leaving your room is one that should seriously be considered by anyone thinking of leaving their PC or Mac at home.

Bringing your own computer would be best. The computer labs are plentiful, but the ones closest to the dorms are usually being used. If you absolutely need to use one, the wait shouldn't be that long. Things do get very hectic around finals week.

Having your own computer definitely makes research and work a little easier, but there are usually some computers available in the computer lab.

The network is good; you have a nice fast connection in the dorms . . . when it’s working. The PSU network is notorious for cutting out just when you need to log on to get an article or right in the middle of downloading a bootleg of The Matrix. There are so many computer labs that, unless it’s the week before finals when everyone has projects due, you won’t have a problem finding a spot to do your work.

Plan on bringing your own computer. Even though the computer labs are pretty good, having your own computer will be more convenient for everyday work. Plus, it’s great to have a computer just for communicating with other students. Computer labs are usually only crowded during the beginning and end of the semester, and whenever big projects are due (like around midterms and such). The general purpose labs are usually not as packed as the college-specific labs, which can be ridiculously crowded at times.

The computer network is great, but there is traffic in the labs. Sometimes you wait, sometimes you don’t. But there are tons of computer labs located throughout campus, so you don’t really need to bring a computer unless you like working in the comforts of your own room.
