Penn State does not have a strong reputation as a drug school. Marijuana can be prevalent in some circles, but certainly does not control the campus. Prescription drugs, like Adderall, tend to make an appearance around finals week, but widespread use is not common. Local law enforcement has done a good job of locking up dealers and breaking up drug rings.

Alcohol is a different story. Heavy drinking becomes a problem for not only the University, but the surrounding area as well. Football weekends and holidays, like Halloween and Saint Patrick’s Day, result in high increases of police calls and hospital visits. Drinking is highly targeted on campus, which results in more illegal behavior downtown. Responsible drinking is always preached but not always practiced.
