College Prowler Take
Penn State does not have a strong reputation as a drug school. Marijuana can be prevalent in some circles, but certainly does not control the campus. Prescription drugs, like Adderall, tend to make an appearance around finals week, but widespread use is not common. Local law enforcement has done a good job of locking up dealers and breaking up drug rings. Alcohol is a different story. Heavy drinking becomes a problem for not only the University, but the surrounding area as well. Football weekends and holidays, like Halloween and Saint Patrick’s Day, result in high increases of police calls and hospital visits. Drinking is highly targeted on campus, which results in more illegal behavior downtown. Responsible drinking is always preached but not always practiced.

If you are involved in the drug...
If you are involved in the drug scene, it can get quite large. But when you are out of the loop, it’s hard to know what’s really going down. |

Penn State is mostly a drinking...
Penn State is mostly a drinking school—alcohol is our drug of choice. People get cited for underage drinking almost daily, and every weekend, the nearby hospital gets to deal with half a dozen alcohol poisonings. It is not uncommon to find puke on the steps of your dorm on Sunday morning, or to only have half your class present Friday morning because of excess partying Thursday night. However, there are still plenty of people who experiment with anything you can think of. A few favorites are pot and mushrooms, but cocaine and acid are not uncommon. The west side of town is known to be a pot area, while the east side consists of frats and reeks of alcohol. |

I suppose the drug scene is big...
I suppose the drug scene is big enough to get what you want, if you want it, but not so big that you’ll be forced into it. |

Oh, plenty of people do drugs, not as much as a bigger city school, though. It isn’t too bad. The people who do choose to use drugs tend to stick to themselves. |

You can find drugs if you want...
You can find drugs if you want them, but they do not run rampant. It’s not like dealers are selling crack in the library. |
