Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although Penn State has a huge number of fraternities associated with the University, only about 25 percent of students are involved in Greek life. The sororities do not have much social influence because they do not have their own houses, and thus have far fewer public functions. Frat houses are packed on the weekends, but there is always more going on downtown. If you join a fraternity or sorority, Greek life will obviously dominate your social scene, otherwise it has no great hold over the campus, and there’s certainly no pressure to join. For those who choose to participate, the Greeks can offer many opportunities for fun and service. If Greek life isn’t your forte, you certainly don’t have to worry about feeling left out at Penn State.

Greek life at Penn State is generally positive, and fraternities and sororities offer a lot to the campus in the way of community service work. THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the country is organized by the Greek community. THON is a 46-hour dance marathon at the Bryce Jordan Center and requires participation from thousands of students. In the past, THON raised more than $7 million for pediatric cancer at one dance marathon.

Greek Unity Is Low

I give the Greek life at Penn State a B because of the lack of greek unity on and off campus and between the different divisions of greek. For example, the IFC and the NPHC are in the process of rebuilding the unity by throwing programs together and hosting socials together. I also give the greek life at Penn State a B grade due to the decrease in community service because during my freshmen year I used to see greeks everywhere doing everything and it started dwindling as the years passed.

Greek at Penn State

I am apart of TAU PHI DELTA we are the only forestry fraternity dedicated to the outdoors in the nation. Just being Greek gives us an advantage to be able to get out and be recognized and make a difference. Greek life is more than what people hear about, like party’s and stuff like that. We are required to make a difference and do community service and most Greek life chapters go above and beyond to help there community and other people in the state as well as nation for us.
