Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Overall, Penn State is a very safe campus. The students tend to get a bad rap when a high profile crime occurs, like a sexual assault or a fight involving an athlete. But when you consider there are over 40,000 students here, plus hundreds of visitors each weekend, the number of crimes is miniscule. Most students have no problem walking the streets of State College at night. As long as you don’t look for trouble, trouble will rarely find you.

There are well-placed blue-light emergency phones around campus, and the student police services are friendly and helpful at all hours. At night, however, there are few police patrolling the campus. The presence of the State College police is strongly felt downtown, especially during the weekends. Police cars patrol the streets looking for blatantly drunk kids and out-of-control parties. Although the local police seem overbearing at times, with officers in cars, on foot, or riding horses down the streets, it’s important to remember that they are concerned about everyone’s safety. On home football weekends, the population nearly doubles from the influx of fans and tourists, so students are not the only concern of patrolling officers.

No Problems

I have never felt unsafe on the University Park campus. It has the small town feel, and the crime rate is extremely low in State College. Of course, there are petty thefts and the like everywhere, so be careful with personal possessions, and if you're into the party scene, ALWAYS be careful and use the buddy system, because when people start drinking at a party school, there is always a risk factor. But as far as violent crime goes, University Park seems to have a very good safety record. Penn State also has a Campus Police Escort service available, so if you do feel unsafe at any time walking somewhere alone, you can just call campus police and they'll send someone to escort you where you need to go.

Very Safe Campus

I have never felt unsafe on Penn State's campus. Take common sense measures, such as locking your dorm when you're not there, but other than that, you should be fine. Even walking back from parties late at night, the campus is safe; just keep to yourself. Although campus is large, the main paths are well lit at night. Campus security has auxiliary officers that patrol at night. All on-campus dorms and apartments are dry, so keep your drinking games quiet.
