College Prowler Take

Considering the small town atmosphere of State College, there are many international eateries and plenty that offer American food. If you wake up early enough, the Waffle Shop and the area’s numerous family restaurants specialize in breakfast food (and, of course, some serve breakfast 24 hours a day, for those 3 a.m. pancake cravings). For lunch, a town staple is the Corner Room, which offers comfortable family dining. There are many diners around town—including Baby’s, known for its 1950s theme, and Ye Old College Diner, world famous for grilled stickies and horrible service. For fine dining, the area also has a number of upscale restaurants. The Tavern is great for impressing a date or enjoying a meal you can’t afford (when your parents come to visit, of course). The Green Bowl focuses on buffet-style healthy eating and is popular with vegetarians.

State College has a surprisingly large assortment of Chinese, Italian, and Indian restaurants. The Golden Wok and other downtown establishments offer a refreshing alternative to campus Chinese, while India Pavilion, Herwig’s, and Spats have food to suit international tastes. About a thousand pizza delivery places exist and thrive. These pizzerias offer many specials—you will try all of them within the first semester and probably become fiercely loyal when you find the one that best suits you. The area surrounding State College offers a similar range of dining options. All but the pickiest eaters will find something to like off campus, and, if you do some exploring, you may even discover a new favorite food.

Off Campus Dining at Penn State

A

There are a lot of places to go for food in downtown State College! There are a few chains, such as Qdoba and Chipotle. Not too far away, are Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse. Penn State has about six pizza places in a two-mile radius. The best place to eat is the Corner Room. Many great options, and conveniently located right on College Ave, you won't be disappointed. For on-the-go dining, downtown State College is home to McDonald's, Subway, Taco Bell, and Belly Buster Burritos. Also, you can't be a true Penn Stater if you've never ordered Insomnia Cookies, Are U Hungry, or Canyon Wings. Needless to say, you'll never go hungry in Happy Valley.

State College Has Great Off Campus Dining

A

Downtown State College has numerous dining options most of them within a college budget. Also, an online option of lionmenus allows students to order food from off campus locations and delivered to their address whether it be on or off campus.

The Landmark on Allen Street

A-

The Corner has the best burgers downtown. They aren't that expensive, and it's a nice diversion from repetitive dining commons food. For a nicer place to take your parents, walk upstairs and have dinner at the Allen Street Grill. The food up there is a little more pricey so wait for your parents to come visit.

The restaurants in this town are...

The restaurants in this town are good. Everyone makes a big deal about the Corner Room (a local landmark) but, frankly, I have never been impressed with the food. Spats is amazing if you have the money to afford it. A great place for an limited budget is the Green Bowl, a unique stir-fry restaurant. Chinese food is easy to come by here, but it’s not necessarily good. Pizza is big in a college town like State College, and almost all pizza shops are acceptable for 2 a.m. cravings.

There are lots of good places to eat off-campus. Fast food (Wendy’s, McDonald’s, 8,000 Subways, Quiznos, Arbys, Taco Bell) and sit-down restaurants (Corner Room, the Deli, Baby’s, Chili’s, Brothers Pizza, Hi-Way Pizza, the Diner, and a bunch more I can’t remember right now). Don’t expect to get any good service at the Diner, though. I think they’re actually trying their best to be known for their poor service. But that just gives us poor college students another reason not to tip.
