College Prowler Take
You know the campus housing is pretty impressive when such an affluent student body as Pepperdine’s tends to lob terms like “palace” and “castle” around to describe it. Indeed, freshman dorms well reflect the University’s eagerness to ensconce its students in comfort and splendor. Folks expecting dingy halls stacked in tall, shabby buildings will likely be taken aback by the well-lit and freshly-painted opulence that awaits them. Freshmen luxuriate in suites of four bedrooms (two students to a room), a large double bathroom, and a pleasant living area replete with television and a picture window offering Pepperdine’s most treasured asset, the ocean view. Friendly janitors clean the bathrooms and living areas daily. This living arrangement offers certain benefits, but also a few shortcomings. Freshmen get to know their seven suitemates very well (maybe a little too well for many people’s liking), and friendships form quickly within the suites. On the other hand, students can settle too comfortably into these relationships and not get to know as many other people in their dorms, as kids in a more traditional residence hall might. Also, the dorms’ restrictive policies can grate on students who aren’t used to random “room checks” or to being told when they can and cannot fraternize with members of the opposite sex. Nevertheless, one has to admit that Pepperdine’s student housing is pretty darn nice.

In comparison to other schools, the dorms are like palaces—but they are still dorms. You want a dorm close to the center of campus. The Greek dorms, as they are called, are quite a walk. |

The dorms, I must admit, are incredibly snazzy. I’ve never seen dorms at another college to match them, and they played a big role in my decision to come to Pepperdine. |

The dorms are some of the biggest that I’ve ever seen. They are large, and a majority of them overlook the ocean. There are suites that have two toilets, two sinks, and two showers for eight people, which isn’t too bad. They are very nice dorms. |

The dorms are kind of crappy. I got an ocean-view room, so I have nothing to complain about. |

Did You Know? The term “Greek Row,” does not have anything to do with fraternities or sororities. The Greeks have no on-campus houses. Greek Row is the residence halls farthest from the central campus. Unlike the closer dorms, which are numbered, these dorms have Greek letters for names. All freshmen must live on campus in the Suite Residence Halls. Each of these 22 dorms is designated all-guys or all-girls and offers comfortable living, sizeable rooms, and usually an excellent view. After freshman year, students can apply to live in these same dorms or up the hill in the Rockwell Towers (basically mini-suites for four people, with two bedrooms and access to a community kitchenette). For juniors and seniors, there is the Lovernich Residential Complex (similar to the Towers, but with a kitchen in every four-person apartment). Best of all, though, are the Honors Apartments, which feature four small single bedrooms per apartment—no roommates—as well as a kitchen and sizeable living area. The Housing Office gives priority to students with at least a 3.0 GPA, so keep those grades up if you want your own room on campus.
