Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

You know the campus housing is pretty impressive when such an affluent student body as Pepperdine’s tends to lob terms like “palace” and “castle” around to describe it. Indeed, freshman dorms well reflect the University’s eagerness to ensconce its students in comfort and splendor. Folks expecting dingy halls stacked in tall, shabby buildings will likely be taken aback by the well-lit and freshly-painted opulence that awaits them. Freshmen luxuriate in suites of four bedrooms (two students to a room), a large double bathroom, and a pleasant living area replete with television and a picture window offering Pepperdine’s most treasured asset, the ocean view. Friendly janitors clean the bathrooms and living areas daily.

This living arrangement offers certain benefits, but also a few shortcomings. Freshmen get to know their seven suitemates very well (maybe a little too well for many people’s liking), and friendships form quickly within the suites. On the other hand, students can settle too comfortably into these relationships and not get to know as many other people in their dorms, as kids in a more traditional residence hall might. Also, the dorms’ restrictive policies can grate on students who aren’t used to random “room checks” or to being told when they can and cannot fraternize with members of the opposite sex. Nevertheless, one has to admit that Pepperdine’s student housing is pretty darn nice.

On-Campus Housing

Because of Pepperdine's central location in the city of Malibu, housing rates have experienced an upwards incline for the past few years. At this rate, many upperclassmen opt to live off-campus (which can be cheaper) which creates a sense of disunity amongst the student body. Dorms are relatively far from main campus, therefore, you have to factor walking time to get to the Caf, Convo, etc. The best dorms come at a cost and are located on the graduate campus (Drescher), there is also a minimum grade point average you must meet to qualify for graduate housing. Unfortunately dining services close relatively early at Pepperdine and dorms are not readily equipped with nearly as many snack options as needed. There are rules and regulations regarding the presence of the opposite sex after curfew and depending on how lenient your RA is, this rule is usually enforced.

Quaint.

I am pleased with the on-campus housing situation here. Compared to other schools, we've got it reaaaaally good. My room is very adequately sized, and the apartment-style set up is nice. My only major complaint: price.

Living on Campus Has Its Benefits

The freshman dorms are old and need to be redone, especially considering the cost of on campus housing. The best option is for the graduate students, worst are the freshman dorms. But they are closer to the classrooms, which is great if you have 8ams.

Did You Know?
  • The term "Greek Row," does not have anything to do with fraternities or sororities. The Greeks have no on-campus houses. Greek Row is the residence halls farthest from the central campus. Unlike the closer dorms, which are numbered, these dorms have Greek letters for names.
  • All freshmen must live on campus in the Suite Residence Halls. Each of these 22 dorms is designated all-guys or all-girls and offers comfortable living, sizeable rooms, and usually an excellent view. After freshman year, students can apply to live in these same dorms or up the hill in the Rockwell Towers (basically mini-suites for four people, with two bedrooms and access to a community kitchenette). For juniors and seniors, there is the Lovernich Residential Complex (similar to the Towers, but with a kitchen in every four-person apartment). Best of all, though, are the Honors Apartments, which feature four small single bedrooms per apartment—no roommates—as well as a kitchen and sizeable living area. The Housing Office gives priority to students with at least a 3.0 GPA, so keep those grades up if you want your own room on campus.
