Campus Strictness

Quick Stats

Students Are Most Likely to Get Caught...
  • Drinking
  • Having a member of the opposite sex in your room or suite after 1 a.m.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students almost unanimously identify Pepperdine as inflexible when it comes to enforcing campus rules and regulations. Even things you do off campus can get you in trouble, so you really have to take pains to watch your step wherever you go. Further complicating matters are a few particularly stringent policies, such as the one that prohibits guests of the opposite sex in any dorm room between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. A uniquely lenient RA may not write you up for such an infraction, but he or she will certainly send the guest packing—even if it’s Mom or Dad stopping by to bring you your favorite pillow at 9 a.m. Also, “quiet hours” extend from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m., which means that if you raise a ruckus, or even a semi-ruckus, during this period, you are likely to get a visit from Public Safety or your RA. Given these restrictions, it’s not hard to understand why on-campus partying does not exactly flourish at Pepperdine.

Nevertheless, students also insist that, if you can manage to hide whatever you’re doing from Public Safety and from the watchful eyes of your RA, you can get away with a lot. Some RAs have even been known to party hard with their underage residents. But these wild souls are generally the exception, as the majority of delinquent students have discovered the hard way. Know that if you do get caught, for example drinking in your dorm room, there will be a price to pay. One infraction will put you on academic probation and endanger any scholarships or aid you receive from the University. The freshman class has also been rather successfully cowed by the threat of being banned from international study for this first violation. One or two infractions after that, and you could find yourself in a heap of trouble.

Christian Morals

Pepperdine is a religious affiliated university; it follows the Christian principles and standards to keep the campus safe and to make the college experience the best as it could be. Pepperdine is strict about underage drinking and drug use. Pepperdine is a dry campus, so there is absolutely no alcohol, even if one is legal. There are specific rules like no smoking twenty feet from the dorm windows and opposite sex has to be out of the dormitories by 1 AM. Although Pepperdine is very strict, students like me, enjoy our college lives and keeps us safe and keeps us away from doing dumb things.

Don't Do Anything Stupid

Some people complain about the campus police but the reality is that if you don't do anything too wild or stupid, you're not going to get caught. At night almost all of them are at the station on top of the hill and only come down for calls.

Good Sumaritan Policy Leaves Wiggle Room

Pepperdine is a dry campus, that's one of the reasons why I picked the school. When I got here, however, they told us about this policy they have called the Good Sumaritan Policy. It basically says you won't get in trouble for drinking if you drink to the brink of death, or if you call in someone who has been drinking to the brink of death. It gives a lot of leeway cause kids think they can party super hard, and then the university will take care of them and they won't get in trouble. I haven't seen it happen yet, but i've heard it being discussed among the other students, and who knows what their keeping under wraps.
