College Prowler Take
Whatever concerns Pepperdine students may have about their chosen school, safety obviously is not one of them. Every so often, one will hear of a theft or two—first floor residence halls have been known to have their screens broken into—but hardly anyone ever expresses much anxiety over security. The in-room safes available for students to rent generally serve as dorm decorations, and unattended laptops are a common sight in the library. Certainly, no one seems worried about his or her own physical safety. Malibu is not a dangerous town, so Pepperdine hardly needs to take many precautions, but it takes them anyway. Security guards monitor the gated entrances to campus 24 hours a day, and Public Safety vehicles are everywhere, always. Sprinkled throughout campus are emergency phones marked at night by blue lights. It is hard to imagine any circumstance, outside of a health emergency, when one would actually need to use one of them, but they are there just the same. In short, you need not worry about crime or personal safety on the Pepperdine campus. You may worry, however, about the rather hazard-prone roadways nearby, such as Pacific Coast Highway and the perilous Malibu Canyon Road. The fact that going anywhere requires traveling on one of these roads makes designated drivers all the more essential to any late-night partying, especially since Pepperdine’s bone-dry campus forces partiers to drive elsewhere for their shenanigans.

Safety is good and always...
Safety is good and always improving. Public Safety is constantly running laps around dorm roads. Plus, the firemen are drop-dead gorgeous! |

Totally safe. Well, I shouldn’t feel so safe, since our security isn’t too strict. I think they are a bit relaxed because they know it’s a safe campus, too. It’s so isolated that it’s safe. However, someone once got into my suite, which was really scary. They were banging on the door for my roommate. It was that easy for them to get in. |

The campus feels very safe. It is well lit, there are usually people out at all times of the day and night, and the campus security team is close by. My one complaint about campus security is that they seem always to be around when they shouldn’t be and are never around when they should be. Be aware that if you need a ride from them, it will take about an hour for them to get you (even if you are only a few buildings away from them). |

Pepperdine is probably one of the...
Pepperdine is probably one of the safest campuses in the country. The actual ‘learning areas’—the dorms and cafeteria—are up on a hill, above the beach. Because Pepperdine is so small, the only threats I can fathom you would encounter would be from actual students themselves. Yet, as an assurance, you must take into consideration that these students have decided to attend a Christian college where Christian values are upheld. Violence, vandalism, and other criminal activities are obviously not any of the values Pepperdine supports. At the entrance to the campus, at the base of the hill, is a security check-in booth where visitors must check in. The nearest major city is 20 minutes away, and Malibu is not known for problems with the law. |

We have very, very good security on campus. Campus police always patrol the roads, and two main gates close off the campus. Any crimes on campus are people stealing stuff, like my little barbeque grill last semester. I guess someone couldn’t wait to grill a steak. |
