Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

To cater to the rich but laid-back local population, restaurants all along the Malibu coast represent a mix of gourmet cooking, overpriced novelties, and fun little places to get a sandwich or some seafood at somewhat reasonable prices. Of course, the old standbys receive most of the attention and lunch money of Pepperdine students. It’s nearly impossible to walk into Coogie’s, La Salsa, or Howdy’s without seeing someone you know. The food at these and other places is reliably delicious and affordable, and their popularity among the student body makes for an off-campus community atmosphere not to be found elsewhere.

As for the more expensive Malibu restaurants, students on any sort of a budget obviously can’t afford to partake very often. When someone mentions that his or her parents came last weekend to visit, the first question to pop out of other students’ mouths is where did they take you to eat? The next question will likely be which celebrities did you see there? The downside to off-campus dining is that you virtually have to be a movie star or a hit recording artist to afford some of the great Malibu offerings on a regular basis. The variety of cheaper options, other than those mentioned above, is not overwhelming.

Expensive but Delicious

Most off campus dining is expensive in Malibu, but it is because we are in Malibu. However, 20 minutes away is Santa Monica and most people will get food there. There will be cheap and delicious food. Around 30 minutes away is Korean Town, Japanese Town and Thai Town. Good off campus dining could still be available if you are willing to drive a bit.
