College Prowler Take
Pepperdiners clearly find off-campus housing to be something of a hassle. If your wallet or purse isn’t bursting with excess currency, living in Malibu is probably not an option. If you live “through the canyon,” as most opt to do, prices are still fairly high, and the commute gets to be a pain in the neck (especially when they’re doing road construction, which seems to be always, or when one slow driver clogs the entirety of Malibu Canyon and stretches your 11-mile trip into a half-hour journey). The consensus among many, though, is that it’s worthwhile to put up with these little hassles if it means getting away from the watchful eye of Public Safety and the general tedium of campus living. Of course, others point out that staying on campus will keep you better connected to your school. The campus cleaning service and lack of commute may be difficult luxuries to give up after you’ve grown accustomed to them. Yet most students do move off campus, despite issues of cost, commute, and inconvenience, and those who have moved off are usually glad they did.

The secret to living off campus is...
The secret to living off campus is finding one of the houses that gets passed down. I lived in a house in the Point Dume neighborhood with five guys that was footsteps away from the beach and about 10 minutes from campus (it no longer exists---the owner tore it down to build his dream mansion). There are more houses out there. The best way to go is with 4-5 people and get a real estate agent or an upperclassman in the know. If you want a one bedroom guest house to a mansion overlooking Point Dume, you'll have no problem doing that either. Rent is expensive, but so are Pepperdine dorm rooms. Get the dorm experience freshman year without getting in trouble for curfew or alcohol, and then move out. However, I'd rather live on campus than through the canyon. Malibu is too cool of a place to live anywhere else while going to Pepperdine.

It’s really expensive, and if you decide to move off campus, it is a good idea to reserve a space the year before because they always have a waiting list. |

Living in Malibu is very expensive; at least $1,000 per month for only an average, one-bedroom apartment. Many students decide to live in Calabasas, which is through the canyon. Expect a 15- to 30-minute drive. But you will find nice apartments for $1,000 to $1,300 for a one-bedroom, and $1,250 to $1,500 for a two-bedroom. |
