College Prowler Take

Parking is undoubtedly the source of many a Pepperdine student’s complaints. If you get to campus early or late enough in the day, you can find a good spot, but getting your car in it might entail—brace yourself—parallel parking. Not only that, but you often will have to parallel park on an incline or a decline, which helps explain why fender benders seem remarkably common. At other times, the only reliable place to park is down at the Firestone Fieldhouse parking lot, which doesn’t require parallel parking, but does mean you will probably have to hike to class.

Students whine an awful lot about parking, but in truth it isn’t that bad. Pepperdine spoils its students in so many ways that the inconvenience of parking seems like a disaster, but, for one thing, the parking permit’s free. For another, you can always find a parking space; you just might have a torturous 10-minute hike up the hill ahead of you to get to class, which probably means that you will arrive sweaty, irritable, and grumbling about the parking on campus. But, if you allow yourself just a little extra time on your drive to school—which is, I must admit, a curiously difficult thing to do in college—you can park your car in the rarely-full parking lot at the Firestone Fieldhouse and then wait for a shuttle to come by and whisk you off to class.

Parking is free, which is nice. However, there is a nice 15-minute walk to the closest parking lot. Oh, did I mention that Pepperdine is one big hill?

Depending on where you live, it can be quite a hike to get to the lots. But you can usually find a spot to park, even if it does mean circling around for a little bit and praying to the parking gods for a close spot.

Parking can be kind of a pain in the butt, but there is parking. If you live on campus, it is easier to park than if you live off. Just make sure you park in the right spot—they can ticket you. Cars are always safe, though. Over half the people drive Mercedes and BMWs, so it must be fairly safe.

The Boot: A student who has gotten five tickets in a year, or one who has committed any serious parking offense, may find upon returning to his or her car that Public Safety has equipped it with a bright orange wheel-locking device called a “boot.” That thing doesn’t come off until you pay an “immobilization fee” on top of all outstanding penalties.
