The made-to-order Malibu weather nicely augments Pepperdine’s thrilling vistas to create a uniquely beautiful environment. No wonder most students find little about the weather to gripe and grumble about. The average temperatures vary by only five to ten degrees with the changing seasons, making for a very clement climate. People from, say, New England might bellyache about the lack of seasonal diversity. It is true that Malibu seems to live in a perpetual springtime, but I think most would agree that spring is a pretty good season to be stuck in year-round.
That being said, for a couple of short stretches during the year, the weather can get a bit more interesting. Remember to bring some warm clothes to protect you from the morning fog during the winter months, and an umbrella for the rare but sudden rains that usually hit around January and can cause flashfloods and rockslides on the Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon. (These are infrequent but potentially hazardous intrusions on Pepperdine’s otherwise sunny disposition.) On the flipside, in August the weather can turn so warm that dorm dwellers throw open their windows, set all their personal fans to high, and kick away the comforters at night. Again, such weather is an exception to the rule—that nearly every day finds the sun shining mildly, the palm trees swaying gently in the breeze, and the girls flitting around in short skirts.
