Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Pitzer offers a myriad of Division III sports in which many students enjoy partaking. Intramural sports are popular amongst the students, as well, and it is not as difficult to make one of the intramural teams. However, Pitzer is not a school where athletics outweighs academics. School spirit is generally at its peak during Homecoming (when Pitzer-Pomona plays rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps), but during the rest of the season, the fan base at games is minimal. Most students will claim that Pitzer is not your typical, run-of-the-mill institution, and this sentiment goes for sports appreciation, as well. You won't see any foam fingers or tailgating with Cecil the Sagehen (the school mascot).

The gym at the Gold Student Center (GSC) is a small space with a few exercise machines, including treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes. There is also a climbing wall and aerobics/dance floor that is open to the students. Because there is not a plethora of equipment, it is crucial to time your visit to the gym well so that you don't have to wait in long lines to use the machines. Perhaps the most exciting recent addition to Pitzer's campus is the pool, which is conveniently settled in the center of the freshman living area. It is open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day and is a welcome change from the sometimes overwhelming SoCal weather.

Sports Are Fun!

Depending on what sport you do, there is a huge difference. I play for the tennis team. in D3, we are ranked #6 in the nation of all D3 schools. So tennis is very competitive. However, other teams such as Basketball are decent, but not good. Pitzer has a joint team with Pomona. However, sport are not so big at Pitzer. Few athletes. Athletic facilities are all on Pomona campus, but there are great. Wonderful training room staff. Yet, there is hardly any student interest in supporting sport teams.

School Spirit

It's safe to say that students don't attend Pitzer for the sports finesse. Attendance at any sports game is limited, and the school spirit is more of a rivalry against the other Claremont Colleges than anything else. When it comes down to it, students show their spirit and aggression more through academics and social issues than sports.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are never an issue at Pitzer, and the teams rarely (if ever) sell them. Because of low attendance rates at games, tickets really aren't a necessity.
