Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The dorms at Pitzer constantly spark conversation among students, specifically because housing plays a great role in the overall atmosphere of the College. Freshmen are lucky enough to live in the PAS (Pitzer, Atherton, and Sanborn) dormitories. These "new dorms," as they are colloquially called, were only recently built and inhabited for the first time by the freshmen during the 2007-2008 school year. The PAS residence halls received a "green"  or eco-friendly distinction and were awarded a Gold LEED certification by the United States Green Building Council. Freshmen live in suite-style dorms with two doubles sharing an adjoining bathroom. Students often claim that the new dorms are like resorts, especially with the Gold Center pool located conveniently in the middle of the freshman dormitories.

Sophomores live in Holden and often move in to the older dorm with grunts and grimaces. Holden definitely has evidence of wear and tear, but it is the next building to be demolished in order to make room for newer dormitories. Upperclassmen live in Mead, and some also choose to live off campus. Mead residents are able to enjoy a suite of eight rooms and a shared common room. Students can choose to live in singles or doubles with a roommate, but room choices often depend on room draw numbers. These numbers are based on the number of credits a student has, which puts him or her into a specific group number. Then, within that group, each student is given a random, computer-generated number that determines the order in which he or she will choose a room. Because Pitzer is relatively small in campus size, all of the dorms are only a one- or two-minute walk to any building on campus. Parties on campus tend to be low-key, especially when they are in the dorms. Whether you live on or off campus, Pitzer is a close-knit community that will always welcome you.

Comfortable, Friendly Housing Situation

People are always friendly and welcoming. The dorms aren't new, but they serve their purpose well. There are various options for housing, including the new dorms which feel like a hotel, up to 8 person suites for developed friendships. The dorms are very close to the academic buildings at Pitzer, and no more than a 20 minute walk from any building on any of the 5Cs. The housing process is not as streamlined as it could be, but the assisting staff are friendly and helpful.
