College Prowler Take

Pitzer is by no means a technical institute, but student generally feel adequate computer resources are provided. Students will very rarely have difficulty in finding a free computer. The only times difficulties may arise could be during finals and midterms. BLAIS, the online library catalog for the Claremont Consortium Library system is an extremely helpful tool. WebCT is another helpful program hosted by CMC. It is designed to be an extension of in-class instruction. It is primarily used for mini-video lectures, grade distribution, and PowerPoint postings. Pitzer dorms are equipped with a standard Ethernet connection shared by all 5Cs. Internet connections are fast and usually reliable, although the server crashes occasionally. The Pitzer e-mail server has a bad reputation due to recent modifications to the system, however with the new upgrades in place, there is rarely a problem.

Many Pitzer students use little more than word processing programs, as a majority of Pitzer students are involved in social sciences. However, for students who seek more, it is there. Like many things at Pitzer, it’s a preference issue. In short, accessibility is good, reliability is good, and if you need something not provided, the administration is good about helping students out. Most students bring their own computer. If you have one, bring it. You can always go down to the lab if you prefer, but for convenience, it is nice to have your own.

I have really enjoyed the campus network; one feature that I think is under used is the BLAIS online library search. For every research paper I have written, it has been an extremely valuable tool. So learn how to use it first thing.

If possible, bring a laptop with a wireless card. The network is pretty solid on all of the 5Cs and still improving. The PC lab is usually pretty packed, but the Mac area usually has quite a bit of free space. The dorms get terrible wireless reception, so I would have an Ethernet cable on hand. Very rarely have I run into problems with the lab. Once or twice each semester it will be shut down for a few hours or so, but that’s pretty much it.
