Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Pitzer College has a unique campus with a lot of character. Recent years have shown some of the school's most prosperous developments, with old buildings being torn down and new ones sprouting up as frequently as the plant life on campus. The newest additions to Pitzer's campus include the Pit-Stop Café, a student-run coffeehouse with everything to satiate a hungry college student's needs. During the 2007-2008 school year, freshmen were able to enjoy the brand-new, Gold LEED-certified dormitories that continue to be favorites. Students are currently anticipating the completion of even more residence halls to accommodate Pitzer's ever-growing student body. Pitzer is well on its way to creating a beautiful campus with state-of-the-art facilities. Phase One of the Residential Life Project has already been completed, and everyone is looking forward to the day that all of the renovations come to fruition.

Students are able to access many of the facilities at the other four Claremont Colleges, including the Honnold/Mudd Library, which holds more than two million books and journals. Other recent additions to Pitzer's campus include the outdoor volleyball and basketball courts. Students adore these plazas, and a good game is always up for grabs. The pool at the Gold Student Center is another place that students frequent, and with the beautiful Southern California weather, who could blame them? By far, the most popular hangout on Pitzer's campus is the Mounds. These small, lush hills serve students who wish to sleep, read, catch up with friends, play musical instruments, or anything else you can think of. There are always students on the Mounds (except when it's raining—Pitzer students rarely venture outside of their dorms when the weather is nasty).

Built in the 60'S

I would love to get a health code inspector to inspect my current dorm room. Built in the year the school was built (1967), it shows. In fact my boyfriend just spent half an hour folding pieces of paper and shoving them between the windows so our window would should properly, and then when he went to close it, the screw that holds the window shut broke right off the windowpane. The bathroom are bacteria ridden, which has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the people living here because I deep clean everything on a weekly basis. The ceilings are made of asbestos and all air vents have a layer of mold at least one centimeter thick. There are minimal outlets in the rooms. We had to buy our own blinds, because facilities does not supply or install those. The walls are paper thin and people have no regard for others who are trying to sleep or do homework. Any party that is going on outside can be heard from any location on campus. Even a simple conversation below your window seems like a conversation happening in your own room. Doors constantly squeak, and locks are often broken. The new dorms are for freshmen only. They were built in 2008 and are obviously the only dorm room they show prospective students on the campus tour. In order to build even new dorms, Pitzer demolished an acre of California wildlife fauna. The athletic room is a joke, with mostly broken machines. A lot of your parent's money goes to maintaining a natural facade of native plant-life. Even with constant rain, plants are watered daily and replanted monthly throughout the entire campus. Laundry rooms are disgusting and are cleaned only over the summer. The place to pour the detergent is always clogged in every machine at all times. There used to be beautiful student done work all over the buildings, but one by one, maintenance tears them down or paints over them even though every piece was approved by an aesthetics committee.

Buildings Are OK

Facilities are pretty good, Pitzer is doing a lot of construction so hopefully they'll get better. It's a really small campus, so don't expect any spectacular buildings.

Facilities at Pitzer

Because we are a consortium, we share a lot of facilities, including the library and the sports complex, which is located on Pomona's campus. The library is top-notch, a really great library with tons of places to study, though it is impossible to find a place to study during finals. The sports center is pretty set, obviously great for athletes. The gym for the regular folk is OK. Pitzer has a workout room, but it is too small for the school.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

Pitzer is known for being a very "green"-forward school. The freshman dorms are Gold LEED certified, and the current construction plan is to ensure that all new buildings are certified, as well. Pitzer is environmentally friendly and even has a compost near the arboretum, as well as a Green Bike Program that uses recycled parts to repair and build bikes that are raffled out to students during the beginning of each semester.

Favorite Things To Do

Pitzer students are creative with their free time and do not waste one minute of it. You will frequently see students on the Mounds in the center of campus, relaxing, playing guitar, tossing around a Frisbee, or lounging in a hammock. Students also tan and swim at the Gold Student Center pool, take coffee breaks at the Pit-Stop Café, volunteer with one of the many community-based organizations on campus, or hop on the Metrolink into Los Angeles where options for fun things to do are limitless. The Claremont Colleges offer a multitude of activities at any given time—the hard part is choosing what to do! Students are club members, intramural sports players, actors, singers, and playwrights. With such a diverse array of people at one school, activity options must be just as diverse as the student body. Whether it is a visiting comedian, a poetry reading, or a school-wide trip to the beach, Pitzer never fails to provide entertainment for its students.
