Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Claremont is rightfully known as "The City of Trees and Ph.D.s." This small suburb is quaint and family friendly. Right on the outskirts of the Colleges lies "The Village," a cozy area full of shops, restaurants, a record store, and movie theater—all to the students' advantage. However, Claremont is not your stereotypical "college town" with amenities made with the students in mind. Most of the shops shut down early, so if you're looking for something to do late at night, venturing to The Village wouldn't be your best bet. Still, though, Claremont is part of larger Los Angeles County, and the bustling city of Los Angeles is a mere hour-long train ride into the heart of the city. Beyond LA, there are many other places to go and limitless fun activities to try. The beaches, theme parks, and clubs offer students the opportunity to explore life outside of the Claremont bubble.

Claremont possesses a notable charm, and students feel very safe going to school in the area. The majority of students agrees that the Claremont residents are very friendly, and walking around at night is not an issue. For those who desire a town or city whose residents are diehard fans of the football team at the local college or whose bars are open all night after a big win, Claremont might not be the place for you. But if you are looking for a town whose majesty lies in its quaintness, then come on over—you're sure to be welcome!

Pitzer, 5-Cs and Claremont

I went to Pitzer in the early 2000s, before the new refurbishment. When I was there the campus was half arboretum-esque/half SF style inner-city with cinder block walls covered in murals; perfect for the neo-hippy mentality. The other 4-C's were gorgeous in comparison to Pitzer at the time, However, I hear Pitzer has become the leader in leed certified buildings and I assume the campus has improved (and I have learned the neo-hippy mentality is slowly fading out). Claremont is like a small, clean, safe 1950s-type of suburban community (small music venues, restaurants, clubs, bars, etc) which is situated inside a Pomona lower-income community (more restaurants, bars, shopping malls, cinemas, etc). Once outside the immediate areas (typically by car, but can take train to certain parts) you can venture off to LA or spend time exploring the desert on camping trips. The Claremonts are proud of being situated in the proximity of all these options.

Claremont Has No Nightlife

The town of Claremont is not much of a spectacle. It's very small and does not offer half the entertainment provided by the actual school. Most students have more fun on campus than off.

The Village

The village is the coolest place to be on any weeknight, by far. There's always something to do, whether it be clubs, restaurants, or just sitting at a cafe with a cup of tea. It's a fun, relaxing, small and comfortable town just minutes from campus.
