College Prowler Take
As a small Division III school, Pomona doesn’t put that much emphasis on athletics. Some of the sports are taken pretty seriously, however, particularly football, baseball, basketball, track, soccer, and rugby (If anyone can take seriously a sport that requires you to drink a sweaty shoe-full of beer whenever you score a “try”.) The varsity athletes do get very involved in their sports and are often somewhat cliquish, but general student support and interest is relatively low. Athletes tend to attend the games of other athletes. Some intramural sports, such as ultimate Frisbee and innertube water polo, generate a fair amount of excitement, as well. If it is important to you that you be worshipped on the basis of your athletic might and main, then don’t come to Pomona. You will not be worshipped. You might be some coach’s sweaty dream embodied, but don’t let him or her trick you into thinking sports here are all that important. Most students care about as much for sports as they do for any club or activity that they aren’t involved in. “Polite disinterest” would be a good way to characterize their feelings. No one’s going to look down on you for grunting and knocking heads with your testosterone-dripping cronies, but they aren’t likely to ask for a signed jock strap either. That said, Pomona has a perfectly respectable athletic program for a Division III school, and there are plenty of opportunities for sport at the college. Football is really the only sport that gets any recruiting power.

Varsity sports don’t receive a lot of emphasis at Pomona. If you have a friend, you generally go see him or her play, but huge crowds are not the norm unless teams are playing CMC (the across campus rival). IM sports on the other hand are very popular and a lot of fun. |

Sports are not that important here. We are Division III. Most of the teams have good years and bad years. People go to games not so much because we’re good, but because they know everyone on the team. IM sports are popular. Some of the IM options include ultimate Frisbee, flag football, and inner tube water polo. |

Talking about varsity sports at...
Talking about varsity sports at Pomona is like talking about ice hockey in Hawaii—it really doesn't click. Yes, we do have varsity teams, but people do not really care about them. After all, they are NCAA Division III. As for intramural sports, Pomona offers a number of wacky and not-so-wacky options that seem to be rather popular. Ultimate Frisbee and inner-tube water polo are perennial favorites. |

Pomona sucks at sports. Though the women’s tennis team is actually supposed to be pretty good. The nice thing about Pomona being so small is that anyone can participate in a sport if she or he wants without being a ‘college athlete.’ There is lots of room for people who just do sports as hobbies. |
